Male?

We have had Mango (Peach Faced Lovebird ) for a couple of years now. We don't know the gender. We have had Lu Pita (Green Cheek Conure female) for a few weeks. Today I had them both on my shoulder and Mango was grooming Lu Pita and making a purring sound. I put them on top of the cage and Mango was trying to mount Lu Pita. So my question are is the purring sound like a mating call? And does this mean Mango is a male for trying to mount Lu Pita or do females do this too? Any help would be great thanks!

No way to know. Lovebirds can assume the the role of a male or female. My Green cheek makes the purring sound too and is not mate calling.

Lovebirds are non sexually dimorphic which means you can't tell by looking at them. Also, many birds, especially hand raised ones who have been caged alone, are confused as to what "role" to play, and I'm not sure if they know how to tell the gender of other species of bird, though many seem able to tell the gender of humans. I would say that this behavior is not a reliable way to tell gender, but for less than $20 you can find out through Avian BiotTech.
