Nero-B&G Macaw-hatch 12/20/11-DNA male
Ocha-G Quaker-7yo- Female
Razzbin-Jenday Conure- hatch 1/21/13- ?
So I have a Quaker (Ocha) who is 7-9 years old. I was told that in her past she laid eggs. I have not seen this myself. I do NOT have DNA gender for her. Just saying she is a she based on that statement.

Then I have a Jenday Conure (Razzbin) just turned 1 in January. I call her a she for the ease of talking about her. Do not have any DNA testing or any reason to call her a her. Maybe because my other little bird is a girl. IDK.

All 3 of my birds are housed in their own cages that are feet apart but all in the same room.

During the day, during supervised times I do allow Razzbin and Ocha to hang out together. Most of the time Razzbin will groom Ocha for a bit then Ocha gets grumpy then they go back to their own playstands. Sometimes they will hang out and have a bite and be fine for a few hours together. Ocha isnt very bird like in many ways because of a neglectful history.

So today Razzbin is grooming Ocha and Ocha was very accepting of this, then Razzbin started to climb on Ocha's back. Ocha allowed this to happen... UMMM WTH? Razzbin climbed off then started grooming Ocha again. Razzbin went to climb on again and Ocha got mad, little beak war then back to grooming, Razzbin tried to climb up again, Ocha got pissed this time and let Razzbin know. Ocha walked off and Razzbin followed.

Could my Razzbin be a boy? Do conures mature at a year old? I know that they are not able to breed together (thank goodness.... I never want breeding birds) But is that what Razzbin thought HE/she? was doing.....ARGH! I guess this is a subject I over looked since I do not have two of the same species of birds.

So yeah, help! lol

Razzbin could very well be a male!!! He's testing the waters so to speak.

What do you mean by Ocha isn't very bird like???

So if my Razzbin is in deed a he.... can I let him hang out with Ocha like normal? Or suggestions?

Ocha has spent a good part of 7 years in a cage in her past home. Her cage had 1 toy in it that was Mac sized. Ocha doesn't use her feet for for anything other than walking, not even to eat, you give her a treat and she walks it back to her bowl to eat it. She doesn't climb, she doesn't play, she is a perch potato. She hates water and squirt bottles. She is terrified of just about everything. I have to introduce new stuff to her over months time, once a new toy makes it in her cage, she doesnt touch it. She has one bell that she will ring from time to time. She will happily ride a shoulder and give a kiss. Other than that she is a simple gal. I did let her wings grow out for a few months, only leading to many injuries before the Vet said we should clip her.

Ocha was our first bird and I have tried just about everything with her. So we bought Razzbin in hopes that Razzbin would help teach her birdie stuff. Razzbin taught her to play with the bell and to groom.

In comparison to every other bird I have met, this lady isnt very bird like...but I love her just the way she wants to be. :o)

Also how old are jenday conures when they become hormonal ?

bumpITYbumpbump! :o)

bump bump bump

lol. that's a great story. i can just see them grooming then pecking then grooming again.

Jenday can become mature at one years old. Your Ocha sounds like a Quaker to me as there's quite a few like yours including the one I raised. Cracker was cage aggressive, don't eat with his foot grabbing on food, and don't like new things such as toys. So that doesn't make Ocha not parrot like, it's just how they are. You can let them play together as it shouldn't be an issue unless they get aggressive with one another.

That is funny how you referenced a Quaker named Cracker, Cracker was her original name from her past home.

If Razzbin is becoming mature, that would explain why he has become so nippy lately?

Im not so concerned about them hanging out, more so that if my Razzbin is trying to mate with Ocha. I know they can not produce young but what affects can come of Razzbin trying? I also know that birds can produce unfertilized eggs... I was also told Ocha has laid eggs in the past (never since she has been with me) would Razzbin trying to mate with her encourage her to lay? I don't want eggs. ARGGGGGGG im so confused!

I know nothing of mating birds, I never wanted breeding issues. which is why I have different species of birds. I can handle hormones but this is ........yeah.

I guess its time I have a lesson on breeding birds so I can better understand this.

If he's hitting hormones that explains the nipping. It might be best for you to keep them separate as that could encourage Ocha to lay. The nipping can get worse.

Oh joy that beak is sharp!! I much prefer the B&G beak over the conure or the quakers...and you say could get worse... YIKES!

Thanks for the help Mikey!

Considering that conures mate standing next to each other, I'm not entirely sure that climbing onto the other bird's back is an indication of mating behavior. I could be wrong, but I'd guess a little more like playful behavior than mating.

See I know nothing! Lol I'm just lost . Thanks
