Mealy Amazons?

Hello I'm new to this forum, I myself do not own a bird yet I work at a small town pet store ( nothing like a petsmart) but we actually take care of our animals and treat them as our own and only sell to good homes since working there I have gotten experience with birds green cheek conures, cockatiels and a Congo African grey all beautiful and I have completly fallen in love with birds and have decided to get a parrot I love the mealy Amazon and have been researching them but I want to know more about them and know stores from people who have owned them, I want to know what I am going to get into and if I should I want to know I can give the right home to this type of beautiful bird or if I should find another.

First, Welcome to the Parrot Forums! And, likely to the family Amazona!

Amazons are commonly not the Parrot that people think of when they first come to the Parrot World. And, Mealy's are not the first Amazon that people think of for a first Amazon. The reason has more to do with how rare they are in the Population of Amazons in North America and the World itself.

Mealy's are among the largest Amazons and their size can at first set most people back from being part on their life. Also, Mealys have been known as the gently giants of the Amazon World.

Unless you are lucky enough to come across a Mealy, they as stated above are not very common. And, that also means that finding a Breeder will be difficult. Based on that, I am guessing that at this point, it is an interest more than you are standing in front of one, yes?

That being true, I strongly believe in letting the Amazon or any Parrot Pick You!

Take the time to read the first two Threads in the Amazon Forum. I would recommend that you read Understanding Amazon Body Language First and then I Love Amazons - .... as a knowledge base.

If as you say, if this is in fact your first Parrot and in you are really into Amazons! Welcome! That said, please take the time to read, listen and learn.

There is a ton of things that I could add about what it is like to live with Amazons. But at this point, We /I need to learn more about you're want for a Mealy Amazon. What is your understanding about Mealys and Amazons in general?

Amazons are complex, very smart and their personalities can be larger than Life. As Amazon Owners, we talk about being 'Owned by Amazon' and that can mean may things.

I hope you're timeline is long enough for you to fully understand what being Owned By An Amazons really means.

Please understand that it takes resources to take on the ownership of any Parrot. The larger the Parrot the greater those resources need to be. In addition, you need to have support services available and the resources to use them i.e. An Avian Certified Vet or at least an Avian Qualified Vet and the ability to get to them rapidly when needed! Note that I do not say 'if' needed! All Parrots are very good at hiding an Illness and when you spot that your Parrot is ill, it is likely very ill and you will need to make your way to that Vet's Clinic RAPIDLY!

You will also need 'room!' The space requires for a Mealy Amazon is near the same as one of the Larger MAC's and larger cages are a measure larger in cost and space.

I can go on and on, but like I said early: Please read the two Threads and what I have provided, in addition to what others are providing! Then Come Back with what you have learned and where you see you need to learn more!

Those Owned by Amazons are bold, to the point, no bull individuals and families that Love their Amazons deeply and want to see that as part of the build up of individuals coming to the World Amazona! Not because we are Snobs, (well I am) but that we know what is needed to first want to be part of the World of Amazons and what is needed to be Loved by an Amazon!

Hmmm, was I a little too honest or did I recommend too much reading?

Was visiting a friend of some distance that has a Mealy Amazon and this Thread came to mind while his Mealy was pushing her head between my coat and shirt. It had been four months since my last visit and she came to me like her long lost best friend!

As I always remind my friend; If you going to be away for a few days, I'd be happy to Mealy sit! His statement: So, you are really here to get your Mealy Fix, Right! Busted!!!

At 770+ grams, she makes my DYH Amazon feel like a Tiel!
