Mineral Oil plucking sally

Does anyone know if you can rub mineral oil on the chest of a quaker who is plucking? i used vegatble oil before but im out right now..want to know if i can use mineral oil instead?

Maybe short term... my vet put some on his beak after she trimmed it. Mineral oil isn't good for skin the long term, but if it's just for a little while I would guess that it would be okay, especially if it helps the bird to be more comfortable. I think it's used as a laxative though (along with being bad long term), so I'd be use it very sparingly, and buy vegetable oil ASAP! Just my opinion though.

Mineral oil is not good at all for any skin bird or humans. It plugs the pores big time. I always look at labels and if a product has M.O. I do not purchase it.

Not to argue, but for some people mineral oil is a godsend. That it universally clogs pores is a myth It's definitely not for everyone, but as a skin care freak I can speak to its effectiveness for many people.

I was researching treating mites in parakeets a while back and it was recommended for their beaks and feet to "smother" the microscopic mites and works to cure "scaly leg" safely and effectively. I'm not sure how it would effect plucking but I don't think I'd assume it was harmful, at least in moderation-- but ideally would ask a vet.

My understanding is that mineral oil coats the skin so water and stuff can't evaporate, so it appears to "moisturize" the skin by trapping your own water in. This is okay short term, but long term it can cause dry skin to become worse. It definitely does NOT nourish the skin.

Personally, I avoid mineral products and parabens whenever possible. I never buy moisturizers with them. I drive some people crazy because I have to read the label on EVERYTHING I buy! Lol. (If you start reading labels on products, try to avoid "sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate" too. It strips the skin and promotes premature again!!)
