So, I adopted 2 YN amazons a week or so ago and one of them is without leg band. The previous owner said it was because he caught it on a toy in the cage cause it was an open band and it caused his foot to swell up. ( its still a bit puffy so this was easy to believe) She took him to the vet and had it removed and when i adopted him he only came with a paper that looks like she typed it and photocopied the seal of the vet on it. Maybe i am being over worried because i come from a larger town and the vets are fairly official here. I got these 2 from a little town in the middle of nowhere where the vet office looked about the size of a gas station. Should i be worried? I can't seem to find any info on the code that the paper says was on his band. An his mate the female has her band and it also has a similar code and i can't find info on it either. Any opinions?

To my knowledge the code on the leg bands usually tells breeders what pair a chick comes from & is used for their own records. Especially when they have 2 or more breeding pairs. As well as that they need to identify each bird for DNA sexing.

I rescued an amazon and it doesn't have a band, what does that mean?

Doing rescue work, I have often tried to track information from leg bands. Most of the time, it is just for the breeder to keep track of his birds lineage. I have never found any real useful info from them. Usually it's hard to even track down the breeder. There are registries, but, not all breeders use them. And some breeders use leg bands to "dress the bird up", and make it look official. Veterinarians use them to identify birds, like I D bracelets. You can buy them on ebay for any purpose you want. I wouldn't worry about it. On bigger birds, it's more important to microchip them. That's a more positive identification method. Your vet can do that for you. And make sure you register the bird with the chip company. Then, if it's lost or stolen, you have a better chance of getting it back.

Can you read the band numbers on the other bird?Open type bands can be placed on abird at anytime ,by anyone. There are some other fairly new topics about bands around here somewhere.

Birds that are bred in the US don't have to have leg bands, its not required. Birds that are imported (esp. endangered ones) have to have a closed band. The closed band shows that the bird was bred in captivity, as you have a small window of opportunity to place a closed band on a bird when its a chick. An open band can be placed on a bird at any age and are not sufficient if you are trying to import a bird, as it could be placed on the bird even when it is an adult. You are not going to be in trouble for not having a band on the bird. It is also common for the bands to have to be cut sometimes if the bird has injured its self and the band is cutting off circulation. If you want a band put back on the bird, you can have an open band placed back on it. You can also have them microchip-ed as well.

Yeah i read the other articles on leg bands on the forums here and did some reasearch into the lettering on the other birds ban and couldn't find anything. I thought they had to have them, at least thats what the annoying pet store lady told me. She said if he wasnt banded that probably meant he wa stolen or something and i should look into an investigation. SIGH!!! If he doesnt need one i wont worry as much about it especially sicne they both have appointments in Oct. to be chipped. =) thanx guys this calms my worries alot =) Happy birdie momma again lol!

An investigation? Wow, that's a little dramatic, I have never had a bird with a band and I have had two cockatoos, 3 tiels, a budgie and now an alex.

How much is microchipping? I want to microchip my green cheek when she goes to the vet for a checkup. But considering I have to pay for it myself and I'm a teen with no job and I'm not paid for chores. I know it varies from place to place but I'd like an idea.
