Molly is a very pretty girl.
I am definitely a new parrot parent. Tsali has been a part of my life since shortly after he hatched 02/04/15. He came home 05/05/15. He is my first and only bird and we am his first and only family, we are learning together. What I have discovered about Tsali is that our interactions and play are all directed by and on Tsali's terms and conditions.
About a year before I even found Tsali's breeder, I started researching, ordering, reading, and studying material from every parrot trainer/expert I could find. I ordered books, training videos and audio tapes, read on line, talked to vets, etc. Then hubby and I practiced techniques on each other so we would “do it right” when we finally became parrot parents. My reasoning came from many years of training horses, no one single method or trainer has all the answers and most importantly, if what you are doing doesn’t work, try something else.
Clicker Training was the common denominator. It gave us both an incentive to interact. Tsali got a yummy delish treat and I was rewarded by the shaping of a behavior. If you haven’t started and/or considered clicker training, I would definitely do so. It is a great way to play bonding games and gain trust.
What Tsali taught me is that I can’t make him like a particular toy or game. I see lots of really cool videos of parrots doing really awesome things on youtube, and give it a try, some Tsali likes, some he doesn’t. So, it’s a matter of being creative and trying lots of different activities. If Molly doesn’t seem interested in one activity after several attempts, just put it on the shelf for a while and try something else. The more she learns the more she will be willing to try.
The most important thing is NEVER GIVE UP and have fun. Enjoy forget the destination and enjoy the journey.
