FROM HAWAII TO TEXAS! (San Angelo)

This spring.

Cons: I have to leave my amazing bird loving friends here
I'll miss the beach and the weather
I have to move all these animals a bazillion miles over an ocean.
Snakes
Texas is hot!
I have to find a house that will let me have all these animals. (We might end up buying again)

Pros:
I get to build aviaries!!!
We will be within 12 hour driving distance to family :D
My birds get aviaries!
I can finally have cages shipped to us at a decent price!
We might get horses.
BIRD FAIRS!!!!!!!!!
I CAN BUILD AVIARIES!
I will have access to so many mutations of ringnecks! <3
Finally going to get my breeding pairs of whatever I want!!!!! :D
AVIARIES!
We're getting chickens!
AVIARIES!!!!!!
Hahahaha.

Ok but I need to know- what do I need to know about having birds in Texas?!

Are there bird clubs? Good ones?

When are the bird fairs?!

I had to look up San Angelo to figure out where it was. You're kind of a haul from where I am.

Actually, you're kind of a haul from, well... ummm...

Don't take it from me. I don't get out much any more. I really don't know my way around Texas at all, even though I've now lived here for around half a decade.

(It's too hot to go outside! :p)

Hahahhahahha yeah it's kind of the middle of nowhere! But I'm so excited to be able to drive anywhere! I'm gonna miss the green, and sand and water though!

You'll love Texas. We're pretty parrot savvy and have quite a few good bird clubs, depending on where you live. I'm not a bird mart fan, but, yes, they're plentiful. I'll be following your aviary builds. I'm collecting info on building one, too.

Good luck on moving your big "ship." Will you take them all in one flight or make several? Not sure how that works.

Good luck!

My plan is:

to ship rabbits in advance or sell them I'm not sure if they will acclimate easily to the Texas heat, and I am worried.

Rio (macaw) will fly baggage, Drogo (eclectus) will fly under my seat
The dog and cat will fly baggage all with us.

Everyone else will stay with my friend Melissa and Dani (SilverSage)
And when the aviaries are built they will ship them over. All the cockatiels can ship in one crate and the ringnecks can ship in wooden divided crates 6 at a time.
I plan to save about 2000$ Just in case but I think I should only need about $1000.

I can't wait to be able to get them nice cages without having to pay 1000$ shipping!

That sounds like a sound plan. The bunnies will probably be fine. My neighbor raises bunnies (VERY shaded lot, though). As long as they were well shaded and ventilated, I bet they would be okay.

You're not far from Austin, which has a lot of parrot resources. Yep, I think you're going to like it here. :)

Texas is great, though the different areas of Texas are so far apart it's like being in a different state! Are you going to be living in the country, outside the city limits? I, too, had to look up San Angelo, and it looks like a medium sized city. I just wanted to give you a heads up that in cities there are usually laws about keeping chickens (you usually have to be at least 100-150 feet from any other residence) and you usually have to board horses. Even if you have a huge amount of land, in cities you normally have to be grandfather claused in to keep horses in the city limits. Where I live keeping a horse is gonna cost you about $300-$400 a month in board and feed at the very least. I drive 45 minutes for my riding lessons. So if you do buy a house, I would look outside the city limits for horses (if you want them on your property) and make sure that you are far enough from other residences for backyard chickens. You may very well have tons of experience with the Lone Star State, and I'm not writing all this because I think you're clueless or whatever, but rather because I have been to SO many states ALL over the country where people literally think everyone in Texas rides horses and keeps farm animals. I know that most likely you're already planning on being outside the city or having a giant yard, I just wanted to make certain just in case you've never been here!

Ah, found the rules on chickens on San Ang: San Angelo Texas Chicken Ordinance - BackYard Chickens Community

EDIT: Just realized you have family in Texas! Never mind, obviously you already know this stuff! I'll leave it up for any Yankees planning to move, though. ;P

Actually puck! Thank you for that information. We're planning to be on the outskirts where we can get a couple acres. So that I don't have to worry about the noise and neighbors. My family is in Louisiana but the drive is still only 12 hours! Which is awesome cause last summer it cost us $4000 to go to Louisiana for my nieces wedding! So I'm stoked! . We will only get to stay for 3 years though so we're building our aviaries in panels. So they can be packed up and moved- with all the animals every 3 years! (9 more years and we get to settle forever!)
I found a few houses with no livestock restrictions but we will have to triple check. :)

San Angelo is tiny- considering we're coming from Honolulu! Hahaha. They have a mall and a movie theater but not much else Hahahha. As long as they have good feed stores and pet stores I'll be fine :) and the great thing is everything will ship there! You guys! Omg you must think I'm nuts but Amazon doesn't ship bird cages here and even companies that say free shipping want 1000$ to ship large cages here! I can't wait!

Not to mention I won't be breaking the law when my ringnecks are mature and I can start breeding. - it's illegal to breed ringnecks here without a permit. Omg and the ringneck mutations I'll have access to! I fully intend to add cobalt, pallad and pied to my collections!
My heart flutters just thinking about it.

I'm on the search for a producing pair or greenwings or blue and golds, and African grays!

How exciting Ariel! I know you'll be daydreaming for months :). It's nice to see the opportunity for a dream coming true. I wish you all the best. Enjoy Hawaii while you're still there!

It's definitely bitter sweet. I'm devastated to be leaving my best friends here but I am so excited and ready! I know I will miss Hawaii so much, but it's going to be amazing!!!!

Oh and I've been waiting for a vizsla puppy for 5 years! We're a dog show family! Hawaii sucks for getting good quality dogs and in already on a waiting list for an amazing show pup from a breeder in tx that I've been talking to for 2 years!!!!!

I just pray everything will go smoothly and the kids acclimate to the new schools fine.
I want to defer orders until the school year ends. Fingers crossed!

I TOTALLY understand! I have been living in the Caribbean for the past three months, and I am already going NUTS. I had a package of $400 of stuff just disappear within a shipping company. UGH!

How exciting! Good luck with your move! :) No advice but I'd rather be in Texas! ;)

You sound SO super excited, Ariel!!! :D It's contagious!

And who or what exactly is a Yankee?

And who or what exactly is a Yankee?

An mysterious breed of extraterrestrial almost as misunderstood by Texans as the strange and fearsome Sooner.

Texas was a Conferderate state... (some folks around here are still bitter about that one. )

:p

Either that, or he's got investment opportunities for rich former New York baseball players...
