a new one and it finally arrived last Friday. I spent the better part of Saturday setting it up. It has windows 8 on it. How many of you are familiar with windows 8? It took me two days before I figured out how to shut down the computer without having to push in and hold in the button for a couple of seconds.

I bet you can't guess how I figured out how to turn the machine off? Yep, if you picked (READ THE INSTRUCTION BOOK), that is exactly what I did when all else failed:). I'm not liking this windows 8 very much.

Well Mike, Nobody likes Win8 very much, but what can you do...

I quite like Win8 actually! I was reluctant to change and really hated it, but once I got into the swing of things it's not that bad :)

Windows button + C ('charm bar') will get you to the shut down menu - for anyone else stumped ;)

LOL, everybody hates windows 8. If you buy the corporate version you can downgrade back to windows 7

Lol my step dad, who works for Microsoft, said windows 8 and 7 are equally as good. But that windows 8 is better for people with touch screens

So true, we have both at work.
But when your use to the old interface windows 8 is a pain only because people are reluctant to change. LOL

Congrats Mike
Soon you will get the hang of it
At our age these things take a while to get used to LoL

I just got a new computer 3 days ago myself and have been struggling through Windows 8 and it took me two days to figure out how to shut down too lol. I still have my other computer so I still have win 7 to work on. On the plus size the new one is a core i7, and I've already bought 32gb of ram to put in it as my Christmas present lol

PC gaming is one of the few reasons that I haven't changed to a Mac.

I went from windows to Mac several years ago now....There's still things I'm learning about Mac....My partner wanted that touch screen back then but I saw the IMac and fell in love with it and got the 27" IMac. I work with windows very little now days, it's whenever people needs help with their computer when I have to work on it. It takes me a little bit to figure things out. I'm gonna have to play with Windows 8 to see how it is....

....and then there was mac....:)

I DID buy an iMac but so many of the programs I was using didn't work well on the mac and worse, wasn't supported at all. It was a G5 and I know they now use intel processors, so maybe that makes a difference. I can't believe what I paid for that thing and it's practically brand new still and it's sitting in the box it came in down in a storage closet. I think Microsoft tried to make windows 8 more like a mac OSX.

that must have been very disappointing!...

I know all about a pc, but now I am using a mac, I am still learning....it can be complicated at times....sigh....

Well I was disappointed but it was a live and learn type situation. I know that mac users are very loyal and love that product. I worked for a law firm as a systems manager, and so got pulled into PC's and mainframes early so that is where my focus was. I think I'll give the iMac to my brother, it really is a beautiful piece of electronics. I LOVE technology and love reading the specs and doing the upgrades, etc., it's just something I've always liked to do.

LOL Mike!!! You're not the only one who had problem finding the "off" button...or even the "restart" button for that matter. :54:

My PC is running Win7, but my new laptop is Win8 (touchscreen). I LOVE the touchscreen though, I won't lie. :) The only thing I STILL haven't figured out is how to play my Big Fish Games on the laptop. :( I don't think any of them are Win8 compatible.

Jeeez GaryBV what games are you running on that beast??

Rabbit fur clogged my video card a few months ago....that was an expensive item to replace to get a good one. My bunnies shed like crazy.

I love windows 7, and have heard lots of complaining for windows 8, mainly what was said already because it's for touch screens.

yay shiny new computer!!!

I cheaped out and just bought the hard drive since I already had a fairly new monitor. But yes, I think it was supposed to be mainly for touch screens. Now I'm trying to figure out how to keep this thing from going to sleep on me if I stop typing or moving the mouse for like 2 minutes and then I have to log back on with pass word. WHAT A PAIN IN @$$!

Mike, please excuse the picture quality, after dropping my camera last week, it's not been quite the same. :o

Anyway, THIS is how you change the settings (how you regulate WHEN the PC falls asleep, for how long, etc).

Bottom right hand side find the symbol for SETTINGS and click on it:

Next screen will look like this.

Click on CONTROL PANEL:

The screen will look like THIS then (depending on what all you have on your PC, of course ;) )

From this menu you choose POWER OPTIONS:

...and it'll take you here, where you can make all necessary changes, just the way you like it. :)
