I am so sad. I got the call last night that my grandfather is going to have to go to a nursing home :( we had hoped that he could get in-home care (he's 97 and has always lived in his house), but the nurse called today to tell us he really needs 24/7 assisted living.

I am heart-broken, as my grampy is my last living grandparent. I am especially sad for my parents, who are both not handling it well emotionally.

This makes me SO happy that he was such an important part of my wedding day.

This said, his canary will have to come home with either me or my parents very soon. I am searching for a new cage right now, and really glad that I've totally cleaned most rooms in my house.. Hopefully everything will work out fine, I've never had a canary before. I do have a feeling, given my mom's interest in Kyo (She went back over last night with me to be with my parents), that she may want to take him.

It's been a rough couple of weeks… my anxiety has been unmanageable and I'm feeling really defeated. I can't wait for my hubby to come home.

Sorry for your sad news. I have an elderly family member living with me and I know how much care they need as they go through the challenges aging brings. Hopefully your grandfather will be happy in his new home (they often are and make new friends and join in new activities). Visit him often if you can. I think that makes a big difference.

I'm sorry to hear, but it's for the best I'm sure. Hopefully it'll create some piece of mind for the family.

My grandfather passed earlier this year at home at 85, just under two years after my grandmother did, in the same spot in bed. I wanted him to go into some kind of facility, though with his dementia it probably wouldn't have worked out well.

So sorry to hear this about your Grandfather but hopefully he will make the transition easily...why are they not allowing him to take his canary with him...surely they could accomodate a little canary ...that said I dont know if it would be allowed here in Ireland or not but if not then assisted living facilities should change their rules. I hope your Grandfather settles in and is happy in the assisted living facility. Bring him lots of pics of his beloved canary and videos too. Just a thought; as the little canary is changing home also I was wondering if it would be possible for you to keep him in his old cage for the transition...it might make it easier for him to adapt to the change. After he settled in with either uou or your mom you could then get him a new cage.

I am so sorry that you feel so sad at this life change for your grampy. He is doing very well at 97 years old.

I have no grandparents left now unfortunately - my last grandparent was in her 90's when she died and I wish she would have consented to this very option. Unfortunately things like falls become common place, one happened in the garden and we were not sure how long it was before she received help. This causes the family all sorts of guilt because they feel responsible but unable to do very much owing to pressures of work.

I am trying to be positive for you, he should receive very good care from professional people, also some company should he want it. The realisation that our family is aging is an unpleasant one but as you get to realise things do not stay the same forever. I agree with the comment of visit him often as you can, it will be good for you and him.

I am so sorry! If you need someone to vent to our talk to, I'm here for you!

Not sure what is available in Canada, but there is a movement in the US to 24/7 full home health care, in place of a full care facilities. Still not 100% in place, but worth looking into. My mother moved from her Senior Apartment to a full care facility with 24/7 care in mid December 2015. Had she been in her home and not an apartment, she would have been approved.

It is well worth looking into the availability in Canada. The type of care does play a role. Normally, if 'Nurse' care is required for specific medications or other medical attention that requires a certified Nurse, 24/7 home care is not yet available.

If facility care can be avoided for even six months is worth looking into.

No need to response, just an FYI by having been there recently.
