Today I did something that I NEVER do: I took out one of the birds without closing the restraining curtain first. I brought Gizmo into my office, which is around the corner from where the birds are caged. I thought she would be content to hang with me there. Not! While I was in my office, Gizmo suddenly took off, flying out my office door, where she proceeded to turn the corner flying past her cage, into the living room and out the OPEN back door. My 4 German Shepherds were milling around in the living room, which is why I think she was spooked into flying into the back yard. She flew to the back fence before landing on the ground.
My heart has been racing ever since, thinking that I could have lost her! Luckily she was happy to step up onto my hand where I cradled her close to my chest to prevent her from flying away from me again.
A HUGE lesson has been learned by me. And to think that I preach to my family not to keep the curtain open while the birds are out, and yet I broke my own rule. OMG...I'm beating myself up for such poor lapse in judgment.
