I purchased David Womach's fantastic DVDs "Training Training and Tricks Volumes 5 and 6 / Parakeets and Small Birds" and enjoyed the DVDs so much that I went out and purchased a small Parakeet for my show.

He is very friendly and will sit on my hands and shoulder etc.

The problem is that he doesn't seem to like the millet!
It is not that he is scared of eating out of my hands because I have had the millet in his cage and he has hardly touched it!

My bird is eating his "budgie mix" and pooping so I am assuming he is quite healthy.

Could anyone give me any training tips or perhaps recommend something else I could use as a treat to keep him motivated?

Thanks for your time and I look forward to your replies...................

Hey you joined!!

Not all birds like the same things - just try out a variety.

Fruits and nuts are often favored treats. For a parakeet I imagine you could cut up some grapes or break nuts into bite size pieces.

Dried fruits may also be easier if/when you find one's he likes.

Yeah I told him the same thing on another forum. (I was the one who suggested this forum to him)

A big thanks to you "Mr Spy" for being so helpfull and sending me to this forum. Much appreciated :) I am learning a lot from reading old posts / questions. There is a lot of good information on here.

I don't think that budgies would work for a piece of fruit or a veggie. I know mine would not move a finger for them. They do eat them but they don't crave them enough as to be good for a bribe. Why don't you try a small piece of coarsely ground hulled sunflowers. Mine only get them during breeding season and they always pick them first out of the mix. But don't give them too many, please, they are too high in oil.

My parrotlet is the same way. He loves fruit and veggies outside of his cage(i think mainly because he see's me eating them)but in his cage he won't touch them. Some birds like different things, you just have to experiment.

My budgies HATE sunflower seeds lol. They just drop them to the floor. The thing my bird's go REALLY crazy for is my syringe. It is a lot easier to worm them that way. All I do is put water in the syringe, then they chew on it to get a drink.

One treat i've never seen a parrot pass up is a thing of millet.
