hey i recently became an owner of beautiful charlie blue indian ringneck he already had toys in his cage i came home from work yesterday to find he undid he bolt to the toys and chewed the metal hook and swalled and bit it at the same time which caused it to go throught his beak about out the top part of his neck, he had surgrey to remove it ended up with a lot of stitches and is recovering slowly. with some muscle damage to his tongue he is now on soft mashed up food till he gets better.
does anyone knw what it means when there feathers stand up ?

Oh poor Charlie. That's so sad. The feathers standing up can mean different things. Sometimes they puff up when scared/defense, others when cold, and a lot of the time if he's calm it could be from being tired.

thanks, i think hes in pain to coz when he rubs his beak against his perch he does it hell slowly as if its hurting him :( feel so sorry for him might be coz hes scared/ tired

Oh Bless his little heart, I'm so sorry for you both. He is probably in pain and all you can do is offer him love and comfort. I will send up prayers for a speedy recovery for Charlie. Welcome to the forum !

thanks so much. after his recover i plan on taming him only recently got him and got told he was tame turned out he wasnt

Welcome to the forum:)

So sorry to hear about Charlie :( Poor little soul! I hope he recovers quickly.

Yes the age old Tame lie. Good luck as I am in the process of taming a few rescues I took in. I also was told they were hand tame, except for the male Zon, and they really arent. Heck the Zons havent left their cage in years and male is sick with a respiratory illness. He will learn to trust you and will make a wonderful companion with time. Thanks for getting the little guy the immediate vet care, I'm sure he thanks you also. Have you considered giving him a blankie to hide or cuddle in while he recovers ? It could make him feel more secure to have a hiding spot while he heals and adjusts to a new home.

thats a very good idea should i just put a blanket in the bottom of the cage there would be no where else to put it i also covered his cage to make sure no cold air gets in, im also scared he might pass away from shock do you reckon that would happen

I would watch for signs of shock, but I do not know what the signs are. I would say just a small piece of a fleece blanket would give comfort. Fleece doesnt normally have sewed edges that can catch nails and cause injury. I would say the cage bottom would be best unless you have a flat perch to place it on. Just make sure he is drinking ( you may want to offer some electrolyte like pedialyte ) and eating some soft foods.

yeah ill go buy some fleece tomorrow ive been giving him some apples which he seems to eat fine. ill look up what those words mean hahah :)

if there is an avian vet near you, you may want to call in just to make sure there's no further injuries that he wont show you - never harm in that! and that if he has some wounds that they dont get infected. sorry to hear you little one got hurt! :( hope he recovers quickly.

thanks yeah ill try find one near me, he has some wounds he has a whole just under his beak they couldnt re join the skin to his beak as that would mean they needed to drill a whole in his beak and they didnt wanna risk it as they can shatter so he has a few disolverable stitches.

Oh Sorry my bad - missed the part where you said he had surgery (ashamed... i should read things properly sometimes...)
I thought he hadnt been seen by a vet yet :) so sorry!

Still, no harm in scouting for a vet nearby in case of emergencies you know? :)
sorry again for not reading your post propperly :$:$

omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm speechless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is he ok!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm getting a blue indian ring neck!!!!!!!!!!!!!! was it like a fishing hook?????????????

hes doing okay still bit funny and scared and very quite he still has a whole in his neck were they cant sticth the skin back to his beak coz it can shatter the beak , wasnt a fishing hook you the toys they get have that metal thing that you untie they tie onto the cage was one of those hes a clever boy likes to un tie things, think hes learnt his lesson lol

ohhh that sucks... i thought i was reading an horror parrot story :(, i hope he gets better, welcome.

awww, sounds like both of you are struggling. what a weird thing to happen :( thank goodness you came when you did, sounds like you saved his life!...you could put a heating pad on low, on the bottom of the cage to keep him warm, make sure the cord is not inside the cage, or a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel. I would think the vet would have gone over what signs you should look for, ie...shock, etc...did they not give him any metacam?for pain, hopefully he'll be somewhat improved tomorrow and you'll both get some sleep tonight :)
