My wolf hound plucked my conure

My toddler let my Irish wolf hound in the house today while I was out hanging washing, the hound grabbed Arlo, took him outside & plucked his tail feathers out & gave him an almighty scare! Rushed him to the vets & thankfully no real damage was done. Scariest thing to date. My poor baby.

Thank god Arlo is OK but keep an close eye on him, no effect of shock and definitely make sure this does not happen again. We choose to keep them as pets and are responsible for their well being. I would suggest that if you are not in the same room at any time then Arlo is caged for his safety. PIA yes but better safe than sorry.

PS keep an eye on the area around the tail feathers for infection - did any dog saliva get into that area?

PPS sorry just seen the pic and you are very lucky he is still alive! If you cannot manage your dog and this little one please re-home him we have a section for that.

So sorry this happened to the poor little guy. Hopefully he will suffer no ill effects from the ordeal physically or mentally...he is a lucky boy to be alive. Its not easy juggle a conure a toddler and an Irish wolfhound ...hope little Arlo gets well soon and I know you wont be leaving him outside his cage again when you are out of the room ...its a lesson hard learned but you were so soo lucky this time and so was Arlo.

It looks like he was grabbed by his tail feathers (which "detach" relatively easily for this exact reason)

Did the vet give you any antibiotics? If not, I definitely recommend going back to get some, even if you don't see any broken skin.

I'd also say limit his activity for a few days and make sure he's warm, so his body can recover.

By no real damage I mean no broken bones, no punctured internal organs & the vet expects his feathers to grow back with no further issue. He's doing well, eating his favorite foods, talking & just being himself. It's nice & warm for him in the house & he has plenty of fluids in him. I dont have a problem managing my toddler, my dog or Arlo. It was a horrible accident in which I thought the front door was locked as it usually is so the toddler cant let her in so I didnt put Arlo away which I normally would have. I'm trying hard not to feel insulted at the assumption I have too much on my plate when really I have a firm grasp on everything including my toddler, my infant, four dogs, 1 which gets along with Arlo tremendously well as she lives inside & 21acres that are my soul responsibility to run while my partner works. I find it a pointless waste of time to kick someone while they're down. I made a mistake & I feel the heavy guilt of that so dont assume that I dont.

This is him now his feathers are dry so he doesnt look as horrible. Just clearly missing his tail feathers. Vet didnt give antibiotics but I will call her in the morning as a precaution.

Sorry this happened to your birdie. Also sorry you felt judged about the accident on here. Accidents happen, anyone of us could be the next one posting bad news next. Just look back on the forums the last few weeks. Alot of bad news. We all need to be careful and give sympathy, prayers and we'll wishes instead of quick judgement. Glad your bird is doing well and will have a full recovery.

Thank you for coming back and your assurances that he is a loved member of your family. Your OP appeared a little flippant, my replies are always succinct but kicking is a different thing entirely. We have suffered too many accidents involving dogs and parrots on here. Please do not get bogged down with the guilt of the accident as that will serve no positive purpose. Do learn from it (and those who are reading this in the future) and please ensure that it will not occur again. Very pleased to hear you will acquire some antibiotics for this little one and that he appears well. Just a small consideration re leaving Arlo out whilst you are elsewhere, this is very often putting too much temptation their way and increases the possibilities of accidents happening greatly.

I had Gollum fly into the toilet when I had her less than a month. She flew out of the room and I assumed she was on the floor until I heard splashes. I left the fishtank lid up and gollum was bobbing for fish. Dobby chewed through a mouse cord. Dobby almost flew into a pot of boiling water (she was always the good one and never flew off of her stand... you know, until she did... ) We had to take our chihuahua to the vet for a eye infection from Gollum scratching his cornea. I have just been lucky, just like you were. (knock on wood... no jinxing please).

...oh and lets not forget the time I found Gollum chewing on a poisonous house plant

I can see him where ever I am in our commonly used rooms, it was the one time I made the assumption everything was as it normally is that tripped me up. You don't owe anyone an explanation or apologize for your OP, that's stupid.

Yes, what happened was your fault but you did everything you could to fix the issue. You are not a bad person and this incident does not mean you don't care about your parrot.

Unfortunately, you can't expect some people not to respond rather harshly as this is a parrot forum full of parrot lovers.

Just be more careful next time and I hope the little guy feels better.

Accidents happen!!!!! I'm glad he's doing better, that's important. When I was 12 we had a budgie, he was out of his cage flying around and playing. My brother let the dog in, the dog was a dauchsand, terrier mix but he went after Tweety and within seconds had him in his mouth. He bit him leaving a hole in his back. My parents didn't feel he needed to go to the vet so I kept him close, used water to clean him, cared for him and he did recover fully HOWEVER, no the situation was not ideal. Accidents happen, we can't control everything that happens. Hugs!!!
