I have 2 male 4 yr old parrots. One, being Jack I have had since he was 14 weeks old. Our 2nd parrot Marlie we got 2 yrs ago when he was 2 yrs old.
This is a concern for Jack, the one we had since a baby. His nares for most of his life appear to look wet, although for a short time they were wet, but dry now. But his nares are patchy and look a bit black, looking wet in photos.
He has been checked 3 times by 2 different vets, been tested and looked right over. They cant find anything.
He doesnt sneeze and rarely scratches there.
Im getting concerned because of our other parrot with perfect nares. They are treated the same.
Everytime I post a photo of Jack, somebody always has to pick out 'why has he got wet nares?' Which I can totally understand their concern. Now its bugging me no end. Has anybody had this with their parrot ?

Have they done a nasal flush and tested the fluid once it came out?

Thanks Monica, will look into that :-)

I hope you can find out what is causing this. Keep us informed please

Welcome.

I have to do nasal flushes for my bourke parakeet. She has a problem with one side of her sinus that wont clear up, or rather, unblock itself. The fluid has been tested, and nothing unusual found, so I couldn't put her on meds for no reason.

Right now, whatever is going on is really causing her sinus to act up so having to do a lot of nasal flushes - which she hates. When it's not so bad, it's only a few times a month on the flushes.

If there is anything wrong with Jack, hopefully they can figure it out! Or maybe at least take a closer inspection of his sinuses and let you know if it's normal or not!

Can we see pictures? :)

How do you do them Monica?

I fill up two 3 cc/ml syringes with saline, hold my bourke parakeet upside in my hand, then flush 3 cc of fluid through each nostril. I don't have any photos of it or anything of that nature, and it's stressful on her. She's not tame and doesn't like to be held upside down. I'm lucky in the fact that she's small and doesn't bite - not that a bite from her would hurt, anyway. She weighs about 36 grams, too. Unless the obstruction clears from her passage, she's going to need nasal flushes for the rest of her life. Don't know what's causing the issue, either.

I haven't had to do that yet Monica! Thank good ness...But I do keep saline in stock just in case....There's the medicine cabinet for all the critters.....lol
