Noah - Solomon Eclectus Male
Hello everyone! I'm new to ParrotForums.com and wanted to introduce our new addition. His name is Noah, we had him for 4 days now and he is adjusting well to his new home and family. We are very excited!

welcome to the forum and congrats on your new birdy. He is beautiful.:)

Thank you for the warm welcomes! We are so excited to join the Eclectus community! We are feeding Noah a great diet of fresh organic vegetables and fruits. I have been reading that many supplement their diets with organic, non-colored pellets. Is there a particular brand I should look for?

Congratulations on your ekkie!

As far as pellets I would check online and read Sally Blanchards research on pellets... I will say this... we never feed ekkies pellets, but since our research into eclectus diet is still in its infancy you may want to do your own research (though I.recently spoke to Sally about her pellet research.and she also agrees eclectus should not get pellets...fyi, and the best of luck! :D )

Why don't you feed eckies Pellets, if you don't mind me asking? what do you feed them?

Congrats on your new baby. Eckies are lovely birds.

Thank you for the response to pellets. I've been doing a lot of research and get mixed signals on this subject. How about seed mixtures. Noah's breeder supplemented his vegetable and fruit diet with a seed mixture that contained dried fruit. Should I continue this? I have started sprouting for him and will have fresh sunflower seed sprouts in a few days.

My Ecky is 17mths old and he has been having pellets in his diet since he weaned. He is healthy and happy. My breeder recommended pellets and I have never heard anyone say not to give pellets until today, How odd.

We feed 80% fruit and greens, the remaining part is made up of veggies, almonds, and white proso millet. To be honest because of research done into the manufacturing of pellets we use only organic and only twice a year for the two weeks we preventatively treat for parasites. Pellets do not provide vitamin k (it says "vitamin k activity")... anyway after seeing nearly 50% of eclectus past the age of 8 plucked and growing yellow feathers and male beaks overgrowing we decided we have something very wrong. So I am not the expert to ask, I am still experimenting on combinations of foods. We have no more overgrown beaks or yellow feathers, and poop has improved immensely, but not much more known than eclectus have longer insestines than other parrots and do best with higher amounts of fiber (hense all the fruit). My best advise for an eclectus.owner is to accept you need to continue to research foods.

What pellets do you use?

I feed Paulie mostly fresh fruit and vegies as well as some Vetafarm Paradise pellets... Sometimes a bit of seeds..

Noah Update: He is eating well and adjusting to our family. Everyone loves him!

Awww... he's gorgeous...

I feed my eclectus pretty much everything on this link.

diets

My birds won't eat pellets & if they do it just to crunch them up. I do mix pellets into their dry seed mix. But it is only really there for a treat or to play with.

I have never been convinced that pellets are a good diet for my eclectus. For me a fresh diet has worked very well & i have to agree with Shreddedoak.

I'm not sure if Paulie eats his pellets, because they do seem to be just crunched... Maybe I can use them for my baby conures...???? Saves me using the mortar and pestle... lol

He is very very cute!!! :) I add pellets to my eclectus's seed bowl once in a blue moon for a bit of a treat, but I am not sure if she eats them lol!

Feeding pellets is really up to you and what works for you bird. If you notice things like toe tapping, wing flipping, discoloration of the feathers etc, then get him to a vet and cut down on the pellets. To my belief from what I have read, eclectus don't really need pellets because they are full of vitamins and on a fruit and veg diet they get most of the vitamins they need. Giving them the pellets as well as the fruit and veg is over dosing them on the vitamins, and thus causing problems. As I said, that's really only from things I have read in books, online and from owners that have had diet problems with pellets. Doesn't mean that its fact for every bird lol :)

Good luck with your new bub, looking forward to hearing about him! :)

Very cute bird. There is a similar bird for adoption at the pet store I am adopting my Jardine from. They are so beautiful.

I prefer pellets but most of the birds I have taken in dont eat them. But I found a great idea to feed pellets here (maybe a different bird blog). Grind the pellets into a powder and add them to the seeds and veggies you feed the birds. This forces some of the pellets to be ingested along with their favorites.

I just ordered whole bunch of stuff on nuts.com - quinoa, milk thistle, hemp powder, pepino, etc.
