Hello all... so happy I found this site!! I have wanted a love bird forever!! My hubby brought me one home today. Our local pet shop had babies and I was visiting everyday!! One picked me!! I'm not sure what I'm doing, this is my first. Not sure if it's a male or female either... or what kind of love bird it is. I'm looking forward to a long relationship with my new baby!! Any suggestions, help, info anyone would like to give I'll be ecstatic to take!!! I’m very nervous… want the best for this little baby!!!

welcome to the forums and congrats on your first lovie! i know that feeling, haha.
without photos, i can't tell what you've got.. but i'm gonna take a guess and say it's a
peach-faced lovebird? also, take it to the vet for dna sexing to know if it's male or female.
i would've also suggested you do research before getting the bird but hey, having it there
makes you want to learn about stuff better sooo yeah, hope you get the hang of it soon!

Congrats on your new baby, I don't see any reason to get a Dna sex done but if knowing the gender is really important to you then go ahead. You should post pics, we love pics! lol.

Thank you Joey, I have been sitting on this computer for hours. Could you answer a few questions for me? I heard I can take him in the shower with me??? Also I'm concerned about the temperature in my room... I would like to put his cage in with me at night but our room is the coolest room in the house... Will baby be okay if I drape a towel over the cage but let the front uncovered? I heard you have to watch the temps with them. Your right, I should have read and educated before I got it but I was so afraid someone else would get it and I am in love!!

glad you managed to get it first then, haha. ok let's see.....

you can take any bird in the shower with you but just watch out for it after the shower.
make sure it doesn't catch a cold. also, i'd suggest lukewarm water so it enjoys it more
without any trouble. then again, there are birds who love cool water, lol.

temperature-wise, try not to keep it in a cold room (as in the cage) but i guess it's fine
if it's chilling with you in a cool room but not too cold. it'll freeze it and it'll just feel
uncomfortable. as for keeping the cage in your room at night; birds need 10-12 hours of
uninterrupted sleep. some birds get used to their surrounding sounds and don't mind
them but most wake up from the slightest sound or movement around them. try to keep
it in a warm room that no one uses in the evening (around 6-7pm till the am) for it's
beauty sleep. just until it really gets used to you and its new home. after that, you can
see if it doesn't mind it's surroundings when sleeping. i'd avoid using towels to cover
the cage since lovies love to chew on things, and threads get loose easily with towels
and could cause some problems for the bird. but it's fine to cover the whole cage at
night, not just the top sides and back.

i'm sure others can give you more information too. just follow any advice and tips you
get and don't stress out. you'll be fine and your new lovie will enjoy your company in
no time.


ohhh and, almost forgot: don't forget to cuddle the hell out of it! cuddly lovies are
the cutest, omg. <3

Some health problems are gender specific, and so it may be a good idea to know the gender. I do not know how common these problems are.
