Hi, I just rescued two sweet little budgies and since I'm not familiar with birds I'll need some help. These little guys came from a very bad place where they were left in a dark cold room for weeks, then before that they apparently lived in the owner's car. I know nothing about birds but these two are just darling. They sing and chatter and love to watch tv. I have two dogs that are fascinated by the birds so I doubt they will ever be able to leave their cage so I've bought them a new quite large home that's 32 x 20 x 36 plus stand. I rescue horses so birds are really out of my realm but I love them already and intend to make them a happy, safe home. I have questions but the first one is how do I transfer them to their new home. They are terrified of my hand. I speak softly to them, I move very slowly but they obviously have been traumatized by their previous owner. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :blue2:

Are you able to push the smaller cage they are in, with the door open to the open door of the larger cage? They may go in by themselves, if you can set that up so they can do it at their own speed.

If not you may have to use a pillowcase or some small piece of fabric to pick them up and put them into the new cage.

Welcome to the site and to being a birdy Mom. There is a lot of good information on diet and care here

The cage hasn't arrived yet, I expect it Wednesday. I thought about lining up the cage doors and I'll try that first. I'm very excited about giving them a new, larger home. I know they will be a bit overwhelmed at first but hopefully they will quickly get used to it. I'll keep you posted on their progress and then pics of their new home. :blue2:

Thank you for your kind heart! What these babies go through daily is horrible!

Welcome! Both to the forum and the world of birds :). I love budgies, I have a soft spot for the cute little things. Poor guys, I'm glad you've rescued them and they're in a good home now. This forum has a ton of helpful information... feel free to post any questions or concerns you might have. Many budgie lovers here to help.

I'm sure they'll love their new home once they're used to it. I have a double flight cage myself, and at first Twigs was uncomfortable coming from his modest cage, but after he got accustomed to it he loved it.

We'd love to see pics when you get the chance!

One sure way to please budgies--millet, and bells. All of my budgies love bells--and scratching their heads in them. Also, buying one of those hanging balls with holes in them, and wrapping toilet paper around millet has been popular with not only the budgies but my conure and cockatiels.

Welcome to the forums and thank you for rescuing two sweet budgies!

When you transfer them to the new cage, dimming the lights will help to keep them calm. I think they will love their new bigger space and new family.

Hello and welcome, lots of knowledgeable people here that will provide you information as you need it.

Thanks everyone. The new cage is here and of course there are a few things missing but tomorrow I'll go to the hardware store and I know they will have them. The birds were very interested when I was putting the cage together. They chattered all the while. The lights in their room have dimmers and every evening when it's time for them to go to bed I dim the lights very slowly and tell them it's night time. Silly I guess but they seem to settle down that way. I'll send pics once I've got the cage together and the birds into it. Kinda nervous about getting them from one cage to another but I'll manage. :blue2:

They are in their new home and they seem to love it. I just opened the door from their old cage into the new cage and the little dolls just flew right in. At first they were very quiet but eventually they started moving around and behaving like their old selves. Right now they are chattering and babbling away. I bought them some new toys and of course they are very suspicious but I hope they will begin to play with them. My Yorkie was very interested yesterday but he's forgotten about them now which is good. I tried to upload pics but it said the files were too big. I take the pictures with my digital camera so I don't know what else to do. Anyway we're all happy here. :blue2:
