New Bird Owner-Quaker Parrot

Hello all. My name is Anthony and I am the Lab Supervisor at Biola University. We just recently acquired a Blue Quaker Parrot I believe. It was donated to us and I am looking to make sure it is best taken care of and to make sure it is well attended to. Thus, I am joining the community to learn all about this beautiful bird and what's best and not best for it. Right now the bird whom we have named Calvin seems reluctant to "play" or perch with myself or my staff. Other than that Calvin loves the new cage we bought for it as well as the parrot food we have bought for it. We have included a swing/mirror for it and a calcium toy for it to play with along with all of the other necessities. Just looking for some general help with it. I will be reading through the forums today and tomorrow to try and learn more about it. Thanks.

Hiya! What a beautiful parrot. I believe what you have there is a Black masked lovebird.. I could be mistaken so we shall see what some more experienced parronts have to say.

I'm betting Calvin is going to need some time to settle in before you see more outgoing/willing personality .. patience and let him get to you all at his pace will help earn his trust.

Is Calvin going to live there at the lab? Parrots crave companionship so maybe someone could bring him home with them? I'm sorry, just a bit confused on the lab part.

Welcome Anthony and Calvin! Calvin is beautiful! He's a Lovebird! What a cute little lab assistant you have there. It's wonderful that you are doing research and learning how to care for the little guy. Some things that we take for granted can be very hazardous for our feathered companions. I'm really glad I was right Quakers are illegal in California & from what I understand if discovered they could confiscate & euthanize on the spot.

If they weren't I'd surely have had one.

Wow. Thanks everyone for the input. Definitely after having looked over some of our bird books and listening to you all I would agree that Calvin is a lovebird and not a Quaker Parrot. As for the lab aspect. We are a Biology department part of the University and thus are required to take exceptional care of our animals weather donated or not. With that, I am trying to learn as much as possible and see what Calvin likes and does not. As for hazards at our lab we have Calvin away from any chemicals or other animals that might irritate him. As for that I am leaving for the night from the lab and will see how Calvin is in the Morning when I come in. Thanks again.
