Well hello, we are a farm of multiple poultry and fowl until a few days ago when this little blue Budgie showed up in my juvenile Turkey pen. It stayed there for a few days as we were unsuccessful in catching it. Then it was gone only to appear in my big guinea house. I thought I had it captured there but alas, it found an escape route so last night, I noticed it bed down for the night under an over hang on one of my growout pens. I went back out with a pillowcase with a wire looped inside making a net of sorts but it wasn't there! I searched as much as I could in the dark with just the glow from the heat lamp in the chick pen but couldn't find it until I looked at the little guinea that was roosting on top of the same pen and on closer inspection, the little Budgie had crawled underneath the guinea for warmth. It didn't take much to pluck it out and it didn't move in my hand so got a cage inside and covered it up along with some items that I had already purchased to try and catch it.
I believe it is a young female. It has faint barring on the head but does have an eye ring. Would like to be sure as I do want to get her a friend if we can't find where she came from since they are such social little buggers but have read that 2 females are too territorial and that 2 males or one of each are the best bet.
Your expert advice would be much appreciated and thanks.

Wow, she made it clear she wanted to live with you didn't she? I loved the story! Snuggled under a Guinea chick for warmth haha. Yes, it's a female looking at the cere color.

As a general rule females are "bossier" but I've heard of them getting along with one another too. Depends on the individuals. She's a little cutie for sure :). Keep us posted!

Thanks, I guess I should have known from the start that it was a girl as you should have seen her with turkeys 10 x's her size. Every time one investigated a little too close, she ruffled up and charged them LOL! She had them buffaloed for sure.
I have gone from Am.Cocker Spaniel show/breeder fancier (dogs are old and retired now with just 4 left) to hatcher of Peafowl, Guineas, Turkeys, Ducks and chickens (laying hens, also Goats, Sheep and Elk) and now, a small avian Parrot has joined the menagerie farm...guess I have really gone to the birds! LOL!

nice new budgie :) yep its a female, I like her pic in the middle, she looks like she is stoned in a trance, just thinking about the late 60s, some crazy stuff went down by the watering holes! lol

she looks kinda roughed up imo, though I'm guessing it's from being dirty outside and not getting adequate food - get some harrisons in her and make her a show bird :D

also whats with the ring around the eye? i never seen that before.

Aw, its so sweet she decided to join you - its hilarious that she was standing up to those turkeys! Keep us updated on her! Such a lovely bird!

thanks Sarvesh, I was talking about the iris ring. I guess the chicks have black eyes and the adults get the ring around the iris. I couldn't see it until I took a pic far enough away to really see the ring.
You can see it in this photo of her.

Haha, just reread the part of the the watering holes LOL!

How interesting with all those different animals :)! I haven't been to a dog show in years, but I enjoyed going as a spectator.

I loved it but the heartache of putting so much time and money into health testing, genetics and then finding the right homes for something you've poured your heart and soul into when the "designer" breeds were commanding more money than you could get for your purebred, health tested, guaranteed for life, puppies. It was time to quit. Now the farm is taking off in different directions and keeps us very busy as you can imagine.

God I hate designer breed fad so much!! Overpaying for mutts basically. I like purebreds the best - I don't care how cute a pomski is as a puppy, it grows up into an ABOMINATION!!! and people will gladly play 2 thousand or more for one :S I much rather have a nice golden retriever or german shepherd.

Welcome to the forums! I love this story, thanks for sharing. You have a beautiful and very brave little budgie there, standing up to the turkeys, and smart too, snuggling with the surrogate guinea mom. I'm looking forward to hearing more about this little character.

Re: New Budgie AGAIN!

OK, I have really gone to the birds. I now have, not one, but TWO little Parakeets. One (the first one) is now named Skeezix, simply because it is a name that has been handed down from Parakeet to Parakeet since my mom had one when she was little. My grandparents continued to have one into their 90's.
This one is a little boy named "Scout". So now I have "Scout and Skeezix". Who knew?
Skeezix escaped when I was trying to install a new perch and so I chased until I wore her down (she is feisty). I put their separate cages close together and when they think no one is around, one of them is talking but not sure which one yet so they are getting acquainted. I figured two is better than one as we are a very busy family, especially in the summer/fall as it is time to get in the wood for furnace.
What do you think? I think Scout is pretty handsome myself. :)

Welcome, Scout! He is a very handsome fellow!

Congrats! Scout is beautiful. I love the violet color on his back :). Great for keeping Skeezix company. Wow, a name passed on from generations!

They are both gorgeous! Looks like MBS may have started:)
I love how Skeezix's name has been passed down!

Yep...with my limited experience with budgies...she looks to me as a female..and the lite, sprarsed markings on her head, indicates she is a youngster,to me,at least.
She looks content in her new house tho..Are you interested in keeping her as a "pet"? or breeding her? I'd say if you wanted a pet, keep her by herself. I have had friends with multiple 'keets and they generally fancied each other than being a pet..but then again,it depends on the individual.

At any rate, good job on catching her..and it was funny to read where you found her and how she was bossy with the turkeys! <typical woman!> :54: :D

I was a bird fancier since a young child..I was mezmerised with the wild birds, setting up all sorts of feeders and houses in my yard, and in the winter I spent HOURS looking out my bedroom window with binoculars..I also had a feeder that attached to my outside window sill, where all you had to do is open the window, and roll back the clear plastic top to refill it.

My Grandparents had a budgie, who they let out anytime I came to visit. Sometimes I would stay the weekend, from Friday evening to Sunday morning and "Baby Blue" would be out of his house almost constantly with me,where I was able to train him to "step up" on my finger <and Gramma's!> She got a big kick out of that lol.

Then my Mom got me my own 'keet for my birthday..I remember went went to the local "Kmart" and got him,and a cage and goodies..thats when I decided that "one day" I'd have a PARROT..A Grey..I decided that that day I got Wally..I named him "Wally" coz when he was happy and content and fluffed up his face, his whiskers looked that of a walrus lol.

I think Mom paid $2.95 for the little guy,who gave years and years and years of joy and pleasure, not only yo me,but the whole family. :D

Uh oh, I'm afraid to ask but what does "MBS" stand for?? LOL!

Multiple Bird Syndrome . Or the B can stand for Budgie :54:... Be careful LOL, don't say you weren't warned! :D

Actually, I love to have more than one of anything I like, whether it's animals or objects, so if you have that kind of personality trait, it's even harder.
