I am a new Conure mom - my family adopted her from a co-worker of ours and she was not handled or worked with. We have had her for 2 weeks and she is making huge progress with letting us touch her and rub her - no holding yet she does not trust us enough for that yet - we love her - our cat could care less - but my dog is having real issues. Shanook is a 13year old Husky mix and when Jazz came home the first day he was so excited. He would sit at the cage and look at her and layed right in front of her cage. The second day Jazz started making noises and Shanook headed for the hills. He goes to farthest room from the bird. It took us forever to get him to come back in the living room. Now he will come in as long as Jazz is quiet but once she sounds off he is done. The last thing I want is to have my Shanook hiding away from the family because of Jazz. We also already love Jazz so much. Are there any suggestions for us to try to see if we can make this work?

Training dogs is what I know best.

You have a Husky mix you say. DON'T EVER trust him around small critters.

I have a Shepherd mix that I could NEVER have a rodent around. BUT since I first got Cookie I have been working on keeping her from going after wild birds. I use wild birds in my training. So over time Cookie now ignores birds. In fact a Fledgling Steller Jay could not fly and was in my yard. My dog cookie did not hurt it. She did sniff it but did not touch it. The next day the bird was still in the yard and cookie was going over to check it out. I gave the LEAVE IT command and she did and came back. She has killed Baby bunnies and a robin when I first got her. She was punished for killing the bird. With lots of work and years of training I feel good that if she happen to come in the room where the bird was out she will listen to me. I still keep them separate. One time she came in the room when the parakeets were out. I told Cookie "GET OUT" (a command she knows) she left the room no problems.

Start working with wild birds. Keep her from going after wild birds keep her from showing interest in birds all together. You want to get your dog to fully IGNORE them. When the dog is inside I reward calm behavior only. If she gets even the slightest bit excited I make her leave the room or Lay down. If she is sniffing too much I tell her leave it and she does I reward her. An excited dog is NOT allowed to be near a bird.

Our first birds were parakeets. I kept her out of the room all together for the first few days. Than once she ignored the sounds I let her in to see them. I took treats and let her see the birds I had her lay down and just relax in the room. When she was relaxed I gave her treats. If she ignored the birds on her own she got even more treats.

Train a strong leave it.
work with ignoring wild birds.
Reward dog for ignoring and being calm around the birds.

My dog has a very high prey drive no rodents for us. She shakes when she sees a hamster in a cage. She can good and calm around birds but like I said I have been working on this since I got her when she was 5 months.
