Hello everyone, my name is Bruce and I have recently been given a 10+ year old Blue Crown conure named Bluejeans. She's so quiet and so much nicer to have around than the Sun Conure I used to have, but she seems to be afraid of us. We've had her for 2 weeks and she still runs when we put our hands in or near the cage...even just for feeding or cleaning. Hoping she comes around in time.
Looking forward to browsing the forums and getting to know you folks!

Bruce

Welcome to the forums!!!

She may benefit from some clicker training/positive reinforcement training! :)

Conures are such friendly birds. I had such a hard time deciding what bird to go with and wish I could get more! Welcome to the forums! I'd love to see some pictures of your baby! Well... aged baby! You know what I mean, haha!

I have clickers from dog training. Any resources for training a bird? I'm clueless. I just know that I would LOVE to interact with her more.

I'll post pics soon. :)

Welcome to the forum!!!

There's plenty of videos on YouTube for clicker training parrots, all are the same pretty much. You can watch one and understand the process on how to and go from there. Its a simple process! ;)

Welcome to the forum! I agree, clicker training is wonderful for parrots.

Here's a few clicker training videos

Of course there are!

I would recommend the following trainers and behaviorists!

Barbara Heidenreich
Lara Joseph
Susan Friedman
Karen Pryor & Melinda Johnson

I do not recommend Bird Tricks.

Ok, exactly like clicker training a dog. But now I just need to get the bird to stop running away from me...I hear patience is key.

Here's my little BlueJeans

He's cute!!!

You might try setting up a treat cup near the door of the cage. Every time you walk by, drop a treat in. Any time you sit near the cage, drop a treat in.

He may also need some more time to settle in before he's ready to interact with you. My new girl took a few weeks before she'd leave her cage. Been progress ever since! :)

Just an update...making slow but steady progress with my baby BlueJeans. She's talking to me now, gets excited when I come home, blows kisses and likes to talk face to face. Still working on the hand thing, but I'm patient. It will come.
Now the big news...I went and met my next baby. He'll be arriving next Friday, Nov. 8. He's a beautiful Blue and Gold and his name is Simba. The foster lady (who's had him for 18 months) said she's never seen him take to anyone the way he took to me. I'm so excited to get him home! And so grateful to the foster mom who took such good care of him and actually gave us DVD's on handling birds. Yep, I'm a lucky guy!
