Hi! I'm new to this forum and new to bird ownership. We just brought home a Half Moon Conure on Sunday evening. We went to a bird store that has several different species and I actually went to look at the GCC but had read about the Half Moons so wanted to see them as well. The Half Moon just seemed to like me. When they brought him out he flew straight to me and sit on my arm. He sit with me the rest of the time and I fell head over heels for him. She clipped his wings and when she was done she sit him on the play stand. I walked by while finishing shopping and he flew over and sit on my arm again.

Now that we are home he seems so scared and won't come out of his cage. I can reach my hand in and change the bowls with no aggression but I can see his little body shaking. I have talked to him a ton and I've been putting my hands on the outside of the cage. He will take food from my hand. I have left the door open and he shows no interest in coming out. He won't let me touch him yet either. I know its a scary new world to him but I'm just wondering how long does it usually take for them to come around? Is there anything I can do to help the process? Should be doing something differently? He is around 4 months old BTW. Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome to the forum!
It sometimes takes a little time for a new bird to settle in. With several of ours, they were so scared that we just sat by their cage, talking and reading to them. They all eventually came out of their cages on their own, and in no set time...one may be a day, another a month or longer.
It sounds like you are doing the right things and will be rewarded for your patience with your new baby:) Have you named him yet?

The Half Moons are gorgeous!! I love their mature head colors of orange and blue with the yellow eye skin.

I remember when I first saw the beautiful Half Moon Conures. MANY years ago, I got my first parrot type species, a Cockatiel. At the time I didn't know what other species options were out there and all I knew was a cockatiel lol, it was before the internet. I answered an ad in the paper to get my lutino tiel for I think $50. The people also bred these little parrots that were labeled Half Moon Conures, but I wasn't interested when they said they were $150. Haha, remembering the story now it's funny. That was pretty inexpensive.

Your little guy is very new, and needs some time to adjust to his surroundings and new cage. He's not ready to explore and say hi yet. Just talk to him, don't stare too hard, let him observe you in the room and get 'ambient' attention for now. He has not even had time to "be himself" yet. Please keep us updated. We'd love photos too!

Thank you! He finally decided to come out and play! He did great! I'm curious to see if he will be willing to come out again today. I found out yesterday that he is older than I first thought. They told me he is about 4-5 months but I called yesterday to get his hatch date and she told me 6/24/15. We wanted a young one because we thought he might be easier to train etc. but, I love him already regardless. image.webp

8 months is still a "baby" :). He's a real cutie too!
