Jasper- lutino Indian Ringneck. And these guys aren't birds but we also have Daphne- cocker spaniel, Lilly- Great Dane/great Pyrenees, and Domino- Maine Coon cat
Hi! I'm new here. I'm in my late twenties, from Alabama, and I work part-time as a nanny. Tomorrow I'm picking up my newest family member- he's a one year old Indian Ringneck. I haven't figured out a name for him yet, I'm not entirely sure that he knows any of the names he's had in the past. So we will just have to see when we get home. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone here!

Hello and a very warm welcome to you. This is a wonderful forum and you will meet many friendly, bird wise people. I love the ringnecks. Please send us a photo when you get a chance.

Welcome to the forum! :D That is a beautiful colour IRN in your photo as well!

Thank you! That's the one I'm bringing home tomorrow! He (I think it's a he) is about one year old. From what I've been told, he is a bit aggressive. We were actually planning on adopting quakers but that fell through, and then we heard about this guy. Ringnecks weren't one of the species we'd ever thought about really, but.. as soon as I saw his picture I fell in love :)

I went to the pet store today and bought some food (zupreem), a few different perches- he already had some of the plain wooden dowels so I got a rope perch, a concrete perch, and one that looks like a stick. I wanted to find perches of different textures and sizes since I don't know what he prefers. I got about ten new toys so he'll have new stuff to rotate in and out of his cage and play area, and I'll keep adding to his collection every week. I got him some millet, and some pumpkin seeds, and... I think a little baggie of dried fruit. I'll have to look to see exactly what it is.

I'm worried about behavioral problems though. I don't think he's ever gotten much attention and I was told that he's 'a little grumpy' which... I know with my dogs who are both rescues... a little scared meant- if you look at me I'll have an accident and shake for thirty minutes. So I am a bit nervous lol. But... he needs a good stable family and I can provide that for him. I've already made an appointment for him with an avian veterinarian so he can get a check-up and so that I can talk to her and let her show me some ways to work with him. He doesn't have a name yet... I still need to come up with one!

Welcome!! Concrete perches are often the cause of bumble feet, I would steer clear from them. Bumble Foot: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Options as well as Prevention Natural perches are best. They keep the bird's nails down naturally.

Really?

Ok I went and looked at the perch again... it says calcium, not concrete. I didn't get it from PetsMart, but I found the exact same one on their website.

Penn Plax 5 Calcium Perch - Perches & Ladders - Bird - PetSmart

Do you think that one will be okay, or should I take it back? Thank you for your help, I'm really glad I found this message board!

A calcium perch should be fine as long as there is a lot of variety. I had one- it was dead in about a week lol. Good luck with your birdy!

Natural perches are usually best, as Ratzy said it helps prevent things such as bumble foot, it allows for the foot to not always be in the same position while perching, thus the pressure is not always on the same point of the feet, hardwood perches such as dragonwood and manzanita will also last much longer if you have birds that are big chewers :)

Thank you!! I tried to get a variety of perches with different shapes and textures- I didn't get any of the sandpaper-like perches, they just looked really uncomfortable to me... now I'm glad I didn't get it. But I tried to get at least one of each of the others they had.

I have no idea if this little guy is going to be a big chewer or not... from the pictures he didn't have hardly any toys with his former owners, and only the thin wooden perches
