So i just had to post this.
It was rumored to come through here but now it is final.
What are your thoughts?
I personally have hand raised, parent raised and one co raised.
I honesty think co raised is better.
I think the law isn't to bad, might even scare people off that don't want to put a lot of time in a parrot.
I am currently trying to tame a gcc that had lived in an aviary for 8 months ,i have him for about 2 months now.
1 month in my bedroom with the other birds i a giant cage with a partner,i can get him on my hand already with treats, learned him to give me a kiss as trade for a treat and go in his cage when i want him to.
I don't think that is to bad.
New law prohibits hand-rearing of parrots in The*Netherlands - City Parrots -

I actually like that law. The needs of an unweaned baby are just too difficult for most people (I know I wouldn't want to take it on) and this will probably help a lot of birds get a healthier start to life :)

What I REALLY want to see is a law requiring a permit to own parrots as pets or to breed them (especially big ones). I think being required to pass a basic test on socialization and care would curb a lot of birds being destined for the shelters.

I think a law like that could potentially result in more birds being rehomed because people are expected a feathered little puppy when they by a bird, not a creature that is going to take time to earn their trust.

People want an animal that instantly bonds to them, not an animal that could take weeks, if not months to earn their trust. An animal that is happy to come out and interact and visit with people, not one that frantically bashes around the cage trying to get away from you. People want an animal that they can pet and cuddle with, not one that's too afraid to be touched.

Don't get me wrong, I'm in favor of this law! I would love to see how the the care of parrots is changed if people can realize that they are wild animals and require *WORK* to earn their trust and to maintain a healthy relationship. I think cockatoos could definitely benefit from this law!

But on the flip side, I see parrots getting stuck in cages more often because they are not what people expected the birds to be... so they get ignored and forgotten.

I think its a great law and truly common sense!! Babies are pulled to hand feed is for getting them out and the parents onto the next round of egg laying. How many people here have parent raised birds?? Share what your birds are truly like....

If a baby is left in the care of his/her parents for 4 more weeks or more but still taken out for socialization and supplemental feedings, are you really so naive to believe that bird will be terrified of people and throw itself about a cage.

In most every other animal we let mom or parents rear the baby and we socialize.... Do puppies who are not hand fed revert to feral dogs?? Cats? Bunnies? Rats? Horses?? Actually a hand raised horse is more problematic because they see themselves as part of human race, our horse is living proof... Chip was bottled fed because the mare's milk did not come in. He remained with mom but had a bottle feeding.

I am sorry, but all this means is that breeders need to spend more time.... They need to playand iinteract like really loving breeders already do. I think this may help to weed out those breeders who sell babies out of the nest box to anyone with the current asking price!

Hopefully its a trend that catches on :),,

But just my opinion.

I feel much the same way about humans.....

Sorry, go ahead and yell at me....

Then owning any type of animal such as domesticated dogs and cats should also be required to be permitted and required to pass a basic test to own one. But why stop there, why not require new parents to be permitted and pass a socialization and care test before allowing the baby to come home with them.

I must also add here that no matter how well intentioned a law is, there are still going to be consequences that were not expected. Laws don't change behavior, education does.

I know the law will purpose new problems but it is being issued because baby birds are handled out like candy here.
We have the same law for cats and dogs, hopefully people will be more thought full whether or not to get a bird when they are not tame.
