new member seeking advice

hi everyone, joined the site yesterday. owner of a blue quaker parrot called loki(after the god of mischief) not had him long- only 10days so still taming him but making progress. was told by the pet shop (i know i know i should of gone to a breeder but couldnt find any withing a 150mile radius and this lil guy just stole my heart) that he was 3 months but i know places often lie, he has a tag on does anyone know how i would go about decoding it? his age doesnt matter to me but in the grand scheme of things it may give me a better idea on how long taming may take. also if anyone wants to give me any tips on best taming methods i am open to any advice- at the moment im sticking with the whole talk to and let him out everyday which seems to be working but hes still a bit nervous of my hands and will let me pet him but hes not to thrilled about it. oh and last thing (sorry i know im jabbering on) if anyone could tell me how to post a new thread when the link hasnt been sent to you through admin id really appreciate, having trouble navigating round the site. thanks so much

you are doin just fine, 10 days is not that long, as for the tag, you might have to ask the pet shop, as from what i've read, there mainly for the breeders records?

don't see it as taming but rather making a new friend if his letting you touch him, thats a big step, but if like you says his not happy about it, stop for now, and slow down.
my fave way of making friends is sharing my food, so take a big plate of cut up fruit and eat it, offer him some, either on his cage to start, but eventually he will come to you for some

To post a new thread you go to the forum page and choose the forum. Then on the right side of the screen of that forum you will see forum tools and a drop down window. In that drop down window you will see post a new thread. Good luck.

The ring on the foot is for breeding purposes and identifies their parents/breeder effectively, no form of identification to the actual bird.

Having a bird is equally as hard, if not more so, than having a dog, so have patience as you have to learn to figure each othet out, how you do this will be personal to you and the bird!!! but im sure there are many people who can give advice on training advice x

Hi there, you seem to be doing a splendid job already, sounds like he is already warming up to you.

Below is what I often post, great advise when obtaining a new bird.
[FONT=&quot]Top on your list, a visit to an avian vet is a must. Let the bird be checked over, peace of mind for a healthy bird.
Your bird (name please) must have time to settle down and adjust. Just imagine how many new things the bird has encountered, in the last 10 days. So many new faces and voices, it must be so scary.
To gain your trust could take days, weeks, months even years. Each and every bird is so different. He obviously feels a comfort zone is his cage.
Sit near the cage, talking and singing to the bird. Let him become familiar with your voice. Leaving the cage door open, offer him treats through the bars at first. When he willingly accepts them, try placing a treat near the open door. Eventually he will starts taking the treats from the door, make no attempt to touch him. When he does come out, he will probably climb around on the cage. Let him explore in his own time. To get him back in, place a treat inside the cage, making sure it's visible.

Sometimes it does have the year on it....some even have the month.... it depends on how the breeder orders the bands.
