Hello Everyone. I have just joined your forum and look forward to getting to know you all. My name is Wendy and I live in Devon in the UK. I work from home doing Accounts, I have 3 children, one my eldest lives in Maryland USA and my 2 young ones are at home with me.:D

I have a question for you that im not sure about:
I am about to purchase a Yellow Crowned Amazon who is 8 weeks old at the moment, and the breeder said I can take her home at 11 weeks, however on speaking with him today, he has said if I am confident to carry on with the Hand Rearing I can bring her home now!! She is being fed twice a day now and is eating bits of seed and mashed up veg and potato on her own. I have sppon fed a previous Parrot myself at the age of 10 weeks, but am not quite sure about this one?? I was wondering if you could give me some advise on this
Many Thanks and look forward to speaking with you all
Wendyx

If you have experiance in hand ....then now problem. Or mayby you have someon in your sourounding who can help you?

YNA is one of my favorite, I have a DYHA and just love amazones

What's the harm in just waiting until he's fully weaned...if you have any worry at all..Id' just waint until he's fully weaned....i mean you've waited a while already what's another couple of weeks...in my opinion it's best to wait!

Thanks for your replies. Im going to see her again tomorrow,so I can see for myself exactly how advanced she is now. If I dont feel confident about it then I will leave her till she is weaned, I have carried on Handrearing a parrot from 10 weeks old but not 8 weeks!

I'd go and visit the different babies if you can. Don't get in any rush, I'd pick out a friendly one and try feeding them there, at 8 weeks they're feeding pretty good and not much trouble. Weaning could make you a great pet but won't guarantee it will bond to you when older, unless you live alone. I'd also buy a kitchen scale and weigh your bird daily. Good Luck

Thanks very much. I will pick out the most friendly one and feed while im there. I will let you all know how I get on!!
Are yellow crowned the same sort of temperament as Blue Fronts. ?

Well, now that you have got all this wonderful advice,.... all there is left to say is, WELCOME TO PARROT FORUMS! lol Welcome, we always love new members and i always love the amazon people. As you can say i am an amazon mommy myself. Both mine are YN. So congrats on the soon to be new addition. Take pics as soon as you can, we here on PF's LOVE pictures, especially of baby birdies!

Thank you for your welcome. I too love Amazons. I cant wait to bring this one home and as soon as I do I will put pics on :D

If i had my choice i'd pick a YCA over a BFA ,i think YCA is sweeter and better talker but regardless of species i'd pick the sweetest baby. And sorry, Welcome to the froum.

Congratulations on your flock expansion. Can't wait for the pic's after the homecoming!

Welcome to the big family ~~ share some picture with us ~~ esp your Galah Cockatoo ~~ ^^
Hello and Thankyou for your welcome:D
I have given an update on todays events on my previous posts and have added 3 pics for you to see:green:

Your birds are gorgeous... Has the amazon been sexed? She's definitely a female?

I think you decision to leave her with the breeder for the last 2 weeks is a good idea, if you're not comfortable hand feeding...

Many breeders (or people, who raise a lot of birds at once) tend to use crop feeding, and then say the bird has been hand fed... Which it of course has... The only problem is that the bird hasn't been handled much... This hasn't got anything to do with your situation... just something reminded me the other day..

No the Amazon hasnt been sexed, but the breeder said he is 99% certain its a female!! :D You have just comfimed that as well by looking at the pic!! so hopefully she is female :) I cant wait for her to come home!!

Every time i guess at the sex I'm wrong. my wife is pretty good, but not me. Maybe that's why i have hens named Kong,Jake.Pedro,Sammy , etc.

Thanks very much. I will certainly contact you if I need any advice :)
Well im picking a Girls name for her, so hopefully we are not wrong!! lol
Any ideas on a good name?? We havent come up with the right one yet, so any fresh ideas would be much appreciated :)
Is it true that the Males are supposed to be more aggressive on Maturity, than females?

Thank you all for your lovely comments.. As soon as she comes home in 2 weeks I will post some pics :D

I think males may be more bitiey when hormonal , but hens tend to be hormonal more often. With males they tend to be hormonal once a year but hens can be hormonal many times a year.IMO
