Hello!

I am a new member and also a first time parrot owner! I have recently purchased my first parrot, a Sun Conure. I am looking forward to many long years of enjoyment from my beautiful new Sun, Zazu.I stay at home so I will have plenty of time to commit to my new companion! I am also recently widowed after 9 years of my husband battling cancer issues. I am hoping to find some enjoyment and companionship from Zazu to help bring me through these hard times.I have researched these birds for the last two years and ANY advice in owning my Sun would be well received!! Thank you all for your time!

Congratulations on your new birdie!

And I'm sorry about your loss. I think having a companion will help. My ex passed away suddenly a few months ago and I took it pretty hard, even though he was my ex. I can't imagine what you're going through.

Thank you so much Remy. Yes it has had it's ups and downs. I knew my husband and his family since I was our daughters age. I am so glad that we invested in pretty Zazu! He has given not only myself, but our daughter as well, something else positive to look forward to each day. His daily antics are always so fun and enjoyable! I was hoping that the bird is male and now I am pretty sure that I am right!! He was hatched at the end of July but he , as of today, started exhibiting some sexual behavior on my hand!!:54: After researching this, the signs seems to be pointing to the fact that I definately have a male conure! My only concern is that he is only around 6 months old, and with his new "humping" of my hand I am wondering if this may be too soon for his age?!We are taking "him" to a vet within the next week so I hope that all is well! Any advice would be appreciated!! Is this normal behavior for this age? Thank you to all who assist and reply! Also a very LARGE thank you on ideas of where to purchase nice and larger cages! I found a wonderful one that will soon be Zazu's new day cage!!I already love my new Sun and yes he has definately "found" his voice!!:11: Lol! But I love it all!

My sister had a Meyer's parrot that started exhibiting sexual behavior with her at too young an age, so I guess it can happen. You don't want to encourage it though. I would set him on a play gym or his cage when he does it, and ignore him until the mood passes. My new amazon was courting me as well. I pay attention to him for appropriate behavior, but ignore the sexual behavior.

I'm also very sorry for your loss and hope your new companion brings joy to your life, and keeps you company.

Thank you all for your condolences! Zazu has definately filled a space in my heart that was needing. I only hope that I can do the same for him! I figured that it was probably best to try and discourage that behavior, especially since he's only around 5 months in age! He hasn't seemed to try it since the other day so I'm hoping it was just some kind of fluke. I will continue to watch for it though and discourage him however possible.
