I recently rescued a moluccan male cockatoo. He was very happy with just me for about two weeks. then suddenly my boyfriend came and visited and spent some time with him. we think he tried mating with him on his hand. now that my boyfriend left and it is just us he is very angry/frusterated. he used to be calm and do his occasional whistle and babble. however, now, he is bobbing up and down and lot with his wings half out and doing a very angry loud babble and plucking out his feathers and biting his feat/nails. im not sure what to do but he was so content and happy before. I know he had male owners before me. can anyone explain what is going on and offer any advice to make him feel better?

He's out of his honeymoon moment....Java my Umbrella was sweet for two weeks, then bam the evilness came out of him. That's why they're emotionally challenged birds to own. The screaming and the things they do could drive you nuts, but they have their sweet moment. Give him lots of things to do so he don't get bored, they tend to get bored easily....

Thank you so much for responding! I heard about this honeymoon phase. He was very loud and uncomfortable when I first got him but then he started catching onto the routine and home and started becoming content. This was different from the quiet/shyness the very first time we got him. Like i said before he had male owners before and gets crazy every time a guy comes to our house. when they leave he gets calm and relaxed/content again and plays nicely with me and himself. He then spent a lot of time with boyfriend for a couple days. now that my boyfriend left my cockatoo is extremely frustrated. Could it be that maybe i have a girl cockatoo and she picked my boyfriend as a mate and now that he is gone the bird has crazy hormones that he doesn't know what to do with?

It varies from bird to bird, they can be sexist. But it doesn't mean your bird is a girl just because he/she likes your bf. View the eyes as the males have dark brown/black eyes and the females have deep brown to burgundy red eyes. You can use a flash light to view the eye color to help you to determine the sex. Java's previous person he picked was a woman, he picked her. Prior to her was a man, but that guy says he's always fond of woman. BUT he picked me when I went to visit, she hesitated a bit before letting him out cause he will attack her husband. He did not attack me at all and was very good with me and attack anyone that comes too close to me as he treats me as his mate. Mine is a boy for sure! And my Macaw, Willie was raised by a woman who had him for about 2 years and loved him dearly, he picked me from day one as well, he is a boy for sure. Like I've said, it varies from bird to bird, you just never know as you can not determine their sex just because they like the opposite sex.

okay thanks that makes much more sense because he bites me/attacks me on the ground when my boyfriend is around. will it just take time with me alone to get him used to me and calm down/relax/be content for most the day again?
thank you so much for your replies you're really helping me out a lot!
