Mjölnir a.k.a Olly the adorable Major Mitchell
Hi there.. I'm JD and brand spanking new to this forum. I joined because I have just become a mummy to a beautiful 2 year old male Major Mitchell.

His name is Mjolnir, or Olly for short. The reasoning behind this, is that in the last 48 hours I have seen Olly's raw power of destruction and have heard his loud (and beautiful) screech. Since 'Mjolnir' is Thor's hammer (destruction) and Thor is the god of thunder (loudness)... I thought it was appropriate.. Plus if he ever starts talking, his own name should be nice and easy for him! ^_^

Olly has a friend in Chibi, who is my partner's 9 month old female Pink & Grey Galah. She is beautiful and quite a character herself, not to mention I think she has a crush on Olly!! Wouldn't that be something!

It would appear that Olly will eat just about anything, so far he's had his normal pellet/seed/dried fruit mix and he has also demolished a piece of fresh pear and some corn earlier. This is such a relief because Chibi is quite the fussy eater! She is only just starting to accept pellets, so we're hoping that she'll pick up a thing or two from him.

Chibi had her wings clipped before we welcomed her into our family, but they were cut wayy too short and she has only just become flighted. This has been somewhat helpful in terms of ease of interaction and I really want to go down the same path with Olly. However, Olly is fully flighted and I'm not sure if he has ever had his wings clipped before. I want to avoid all unnecessary stress and trauma to him but I really believe I will get a better result forging a happy bond with him and starting his training in a more limited environment. If I do decide to go ahead and clip his wings, I'll be making an appointment with my local avian vet - I think they would be able to do this for me with much less stress and trauma to Olly and much quicker than I could. It's worth the cost, to get this relationship off on the right foot, in my opinion.

Well anyway, before this turns into a novel I will sign off, here's a picture of Olly (And Chibi)

Welcome to our forum JD
Olly and Chibi are beautiful
Thanks for sharing those awesome pic's
Enjoy the forum

Welcome! Nice pics! I rarely get to see MM2's. How cute! :)

They are beautiful!! And I just LOVE their names! Welcome, from another newbie :)

Gorgeous birds! Y'know, it's been years and years since I've seen a Major Mitchell. I know they're inland birds, but you'd think they'd be a lot more popular with breeders, wouldn't you? I love Mjolnir for his name - how appropriate! Welcome to the forum and do keep us up with the birds' progress, won't you? :)

Beautiful bird! Congrats! :D

Welcome to the forum! I LOVE your new baby!!! :D Congrats! :)

You are all so friendly, thank-you! I'm having such a magical experience with Olly so far, like it was meant to be and the Universe is working for us!

I have decided to keep a journal of sorts, both to chronicle this amazing journey we have embarked on for others to read and provide feedback; and to build up my own personalized source of 'MM/Olly info'. I'm not sure yet where to post it, but I would love to use this forum to share our endeavors with the world!

Betrisher- MM2's are super expensive, in ontario canada, they can run up to $5000.00 for one.

welcome to the forum missjd,

I love your birds and their names, they are amazing looking together, you obviously love the colour pink ;)

Holy moly.. That's a lot of money. I paid only $350 for Olly, though that was a very, very good deal even for Australia. You can expect to pay an average of about $500-$750 for an aviary/untamed MM here in Western Australia. And Olly is already on his way to being tame!

I knew that cockatoos and especially MM's are quite rare and expensive overseas but that blew my mind!

Thanks Crimson! You know, I didn't even realise what I had done until I put those two photos together in my original post. My intentions were actually to get another Galah, though I also loved the idea of a Corella. I have also always wanted a Sulphur Crest, despite having a couple of traumatic experiences with one as a very young child - Obviously I understand now that it wasn't his fault!

Anyway, I love how gorgeous they look together, and I am so over the moon that they seem to be trying to seek out each other's company almost immediately. So much love for these creatures!

Whew! $5000? They can be expensive here (over $1000, which you'd pay for an Eclectus or Black Cocky), but not that expensive! Such a pretty bird, though, and all the ones I've seen have been exceptionally sweet-natured. :)

He's pretty indeed, and quite the character!
When we got him home and into the cage he was playing with his toys and taking food/chew toys from our hands within 10-15 minutes, Can't say ive ever seen a cockatoo deal with new surroundings so well!

Where did you get him. I'm thinking of purchasing a hand fed baby if one comes available. Do you know of a source ?
