My new buddy, a green quaker, finally made it home. He's about two months old and cute as a button. He (or she) isn't quite settled in yet, hasn't eaten or drank any water this morning, although he's sitting on the seed bowl. He's got the sweetest little growl when i approach the cage. :)

My concern is his wings. The breeder clipped them. And it seems like a pretty severe clipping. I would have waited a while myself. My concern is that he'll never learn to fly because his wings were clipped as a baby.

Right now he doesn't even try to flap his wings. He crawls around the cage using his feet and beak. Is this something I should be worried about? Or just be patient and see how he grows up?

Edit: yay! He's eating. :)

Edit edit: he's also preening and picking at his feet a lot, constantly. I assume that's nervousness. Is that to be expected with a new home?

Congratulations! Quakers are amazing and so much fun! I wouldn't worry too much about the wing clipping, in fact I would use the time it takes them to grow out to get to know him and build a bond. I can almost guarantee he will learn to fly as soon as he is able. Quakers are a little slower to accept changes than other species but given time, they will.

Climbing like monkeys is normal for quakers, my fully flighted, adult quakers do the same thing.

Have fun with your new friend. Please keep us updated on his progress, we'd love to see photos. Have you named the little guy?

I just saw his photo! What an adorable baby quaker!

Oh good. Thanks Allee. I will put his walking time to good use then.

No name yet. There's a photo link up there

Glad to hear he is eating! He may be picking at his feet because he's nervous, but it could be his perches or climbing the bars of his cage are making his feet uncomfortable. He's trying to navigate in a new cage and he's not really a pro at it yet. I would give him some perches of various sizes and textures and no perches with scratchy surfaces. Make sure he has enough perches so he isn't constantly standing in the same place.

Damn radiators! He's managed to get behind them twice already. Have to keep a close eye on that. Luckily they're not extremely hot.
