Hello everyone,
I am new to keeping birds and I recently purchased a 3-4 month old yellow lored amazon and a 5 month goffin cockatoo. I am having trouble finding information on yellow lored amazons I assume its because they are rare. Are there any current keepers of yellow lored who can give some advice on anything. my yellow lored is a male his name is Pico and my goffin is a female her name is TJ.

Thanks!

Glad you found us!

Hello Srod88,

Congratulations and welcome.

Welcome and be welcomed. Amazons. Well first read the 2 stickies on the top of the amazon sub forum. several times. and then read them , out loud to your parrots several times, in a nice soothing voice. The three most popular species are the hot 3, yellow naped, blue front and double yellow head. All amazons share some characteristics, but not all, and not in the same degree . Generally the smaller the species the less the common traits will be present. This in itself is a generalization and a list of traits will be the same. I have a yellow shoulder zon. They are supposed to be more laid back (check) mellower ( check) not as loud ( nope) and not as good talkers as the hot three( nope). SO you can expect your YLA to have some of these traits, in varying degrees. Member Sailboats is a real amazon expert and advice by him is worth its weight in gold. Sorry, I have no 'too experience, but there are lots of good 'too people on here, ask your questions freely.

Welcome to you, Pico, and TJ!! Quite a pair of differing personalities for sure! If they are agreeable, socializing them together will pay great dividends once they reach adulthood. Feel free to post specific questions!

Hey everyone thank you for your warm welcomes. I currently have Pico living with me but TJ is still at the pet shop :( hopefully she comes home in a week or soo. Stubborn and still taking baby food.

Happy to see TJ is being carefully weaned. Nothing worst to start out life than being cut off from security and nourishment too soon. She will be worth the wait, Goffins are awesome birds!

I know Scott she is awesome. Very nippy but I assume it will go away with time.. and its probably due to being hungry.

wow that's a sudden jump from no birds! Sounds like you've both taken very well to each other, hopefully little baby enjoys you as well.

the second I saw that word Amazon I could hear the march of the Amazon brigade! In short listen to EVERYTHING Wrench and sailboat has to say. I've met Zoo keepers who can't hold a candle to those 2 when it comes to Amazons and then listen to Scott for everything Goffins related. If you want to hear some random ramblings then do please come to me! I'll talk nonsense for days

Very likely, they are not generally nippy birds.

I tried to upload some pictures of Pico and TJ
