Good day everyone,
I am a proud mother of a lovely 7 weeks old sun conure named Chidori. I know you all are going to yell at me when i tell you how long ive had her...but ive had her since she was just a little over 3 weeks old.....yes i know but please dont be mad at me i didnt know anything about birds and never owned one before. So here i am now and everything has gone well. I feed her a few times like 3 or 4 at the pet store before they let me take her home but i was still a bit uneasy having this tiny bird with only a little feathers and only handfed (her) only 3 or 4 times in my life....the pet store own told me that once i get home i will feel better about feeding her on my own because i wont have someone looking over me.....no i felt even worse because there WASNT someone there to watch over me. She is my world and i love her so much. She spends more time with me then in her cage and already she has learned not to poop on me and will let me know when she has to and i will put her down on a paper towel....she does she thing and walks right back to me or flys onto me.
Since i had her she started to sneeze and you have no idea how freaked i was, i thought....great i fed her wrong and shes going to die but come to find out she was just not use to my house and she may get little stuff in her nose or lungs and thats just getting that out. She never got sick and has been a happy active bird. She plays and dances a little, she likes to be on mommy all the time but i dont let her all the time because i want her to play with toys and learn to eat. So now i am in the weaning stage and she is playing with her food which is much better then before. She wouldnt even look at food....but now thats getting better. I put all kinds of foods in her cage for her to eat. She has All Bran, organic oats, fresh vegs and one a day or every other day a bit of fresh fruit and Exact Rainbow fruit feed for parrots and conures.....its got everything in it from dry fruit to big food to tiny little food and she likes it. I have her on 2 handfeeds daily...but i cant wait till she is all the way weaned...its just too scary everytime i feed her i just worry too much. The lady at the pet store just told me that i have to hand fed her for 10 more weeks and my heart sank....i was never nervous and worried....then she told me that after 2 weeks of having her to put pellets in the cage, and that she will start seeing it and then playing with it and then eat it. Her sneeze is still around a bit and its super scary because i dont want to run to the vet every sneeze just to find out its nothing again and again but on the same note what if the next one is she being sick. She acts the same same...plays, climbs, screams ect.....the vet said that the house, our 2 dogs, my husband smoking where the smoke can get near her.....she stays with me in the living room and he smokes outside but the smoke comes right in. So i guess i just watch her and if she starts to act sick then i will rush her to the vet....again.
I do need to know though because the pet store lady didnt tell me crap really but when do i start to mist her or give her a bath? she has a small bowl of water in her cage but she never gets in it and i dont know if it good or bad for her to get mist...the mist can be good for mites or dirt that makes her sneeze but also if she gets some of the mist in her lungs I dont want it to make her sick ......im sorry im ranting and worry warting but i really love my Chidori and unlike some other people....i dont mind the screaming lol Thank you :orange::rainbow1:

Hi,
i think some other members may have more experience with babies than i do, but that is quite young for a store to release a baby. However in the end you may have a bird who just adores you.
I think it's always a good idea to have a 'new' bird examined by an avian vet. I am getting a new baby in a few weeks (he will be approx 2.5 months old) and taking him to the vet just to check him over. That would ease some of your worries too, knowing the weight is correct and having that 'sneeze' checked out.
I think i would also be sure to keep the bird warm. If he is just getting his feathers growing in and bulking up in weight, he may hvae a harder time maintaining his body temperature. (Also good for a sick bird--when i have had them ill, i warm them until they get to a vet to 'save their energy').

ruffledfeathers- thank you for your reply. She has a lot of feathers now because she is 7 weeks but when i first got her she didnt have much feathers lol. I have taken her to the vet and they said she is healthy and fine but that dust or other stuff is making her sneeze....i guess like allergies they said. But she is doing great just a worried bird mom i guess lol. :orange:

Well that is good!! If the vet thinks she is good, then just keep doing what you are doing, and keep tabs on her eating and weight as she fully weans.
My sun conure did well in a house with dogs and actually enjoyed watching them run around.

lol yeah we have 2 small dogs and jack he is scared of her so stays away but our other dog chou chou thinks she is a play toy and tries to run her over so we keep him away from her until she is bigger lol.
I have been keeping a good watch on her and she is always around me and she does well i dont know why she sneezes and the vet doesnt know but he said at least isnt nothing making her sick so thats good just worry

Birds sneeze just like we do. It's all normal. The time to be concerned is if there is a discharge.

Baby was definitely a little too young for you to take home, but look at it on the bright side. You have experience over many of us that bought birds at older ages.

One of my dogs is named "chu chu". funny.

lol yeah i may know a bit more on raising up a little bird but it was nerve wrenching worry all the time because so many posts on the internet lol

Hey congrats on your baby I had my severe macaw since 3 weeks as well now he's one ,just some advise for a better down the line bird let everyone play with her(if you wanna make sure they clean there hands they can do so lol) but everyone need to hold her spend time with her so she DNt just bond with you put different fruits everyday in I did bananas 1 week apple 2 week get me so they can just get use to different things by 5 months start bring different toys and different objects pencils pens markers ruler DVDs CDs water spray bottle anything and everything DNt let them play with it but play with her while it's very close so she don't have any problems in the future of
Becoming scarred,...now the sneezing problem idk how to help you try to keep the bird away from a draft (wind) remember they have no feathers they get cold easy with my parrot I got the brown hamster bedding and I had kept my parrot in there till he got bigger and learned how to climb but it kept him warm I also cleaned it everyday, when he get older where he can walk and balance him self put him in a pet carrier so he's not afraid of what it is so down the line if it's vet time he knows he's safe in there ,I started to shower my bird when he was fully fathered I can't say exactly Cus I have a macaw not a little guy like you, I offered a hamster bowl of bananas a lot because there soft and easy to swallow he will play with eat eat or etc I also put a bowl of water so he will drink etc I used hard plastic bowl that are about 3 inch big there for hamsters you can miss it,I fed my bird 3 times a day I believ for 6 months then I fed formula once in the am bananans other fruits after noon then back to formula at night did that for a few he started to eat more bananas and fruits and veggies then I kept on till he stopped wanting food ,this might sound weird but they will let you know when it's enuff, when I believe he was 4 months he didn't want food it the am I tried everyday but he will move away didn't seem to care then I kept trying everyday (remember don't force them) then one day he started to eat in the am again then I was back To a normal schedule

Im not sure if they told you this but let's say you feed your bird at 6 a:m 3p:m and 9 p:m and your about to feed him at 3 p:m if he has food in his crop that's his throat don't feed him you must wait till its gone ,I can't describe it it's very hard to it where thy keep there food at and eat it tru the day. Also make sure the formula looks like applesauce or a little thicker you don't want it to watery or to lumpy also make sure it nice and warm don't microwave the food, just nice warm water then fees him never keep left over food to test the warm ness it's like feeding a baby put some in the back of your hand if it burns you it will burn the baby i use to put my
Finger in his food if it was to hot trust me you will know I just wait a few then check again ,

It's not hard to raise a baby trust me I fed my parrot for the first time when I got him you can to

Any question feel free to message me
Enjoy Henry

Btw I did this on my iPhone so any errors not my fault

I kept in a plastic container once where you keep food in for storage but a nice big once about a foot or two big and about half a foot wide with some brown bedding very little but enuff to cover to floor,2 food bowls one with water another with food, when he hit a couple of months and started to perch I put 2 holes on the side and stuck a perch in so he started to learn how to perch .

If I ind some pictures of wen he was little I will post them ASAP
