Hi! I'm Karen, and I just got a new Sun Conure on Sunday named Papaya. He's the sweetest little bird, very active, eats well, drinks water. My only concern is he appears to have a small indentation on the side of his beak. Is this anything to be worried about? Or is it just a small cosmetic imperfection?

I'm attempting to attach a picture so you can all see what I'm talking about...hope it works!

It looks to be something from birth, maybe a trauma to the beak . I would keep an eye on it and make sure it does not crack or split in the spot. Over time the beak may grow to where a vet could file that spot.

Bird's beaks are layers of keratin & sometimes little pieces will break off, but as long as the break is not at the bed (growing area at the head), the beak will re-grow. Like our finger nails, their beaks grow from the bed out.....

A notch that far back may take six months or so to grow out, or your vet may be able to dremel it to a more pleasing look.....in any event it will not hamper his eating or give him any pain.....

Welcome to the forum. It doesn't look like a major problem, but a wellness checkup with your vet would be advised. Not just because of the beak, but to make sure your new little feathered darling is in tip top shape.

He is adorable & good luck on becoming a parront. It is a most rewarding job!
