Greater Vasa
Just wanted to stop in and say hi. In research today I found information on the Greater Vasa parrot right here! Petoskey is new to me and just want to keep things going the right direction. There are so few gv owners which makes it hard to gather information.

Nice to meet y'all.

Yes, the Vasa's are VERY hard to get info on, a friend has one & has had a real hard time getting verifiable info on them.

Hey Stone,welcome to the forum.

Hello and welcome! Have any pics to share? :)

Thanks for the welcome folks.

No pictures until new phone figures out how to upload!

Old World Aviaries would have some information since they still breed this species. There is a breeder on the west coast and one in florida.

Their feeding habits can be a bit different including small birds

Looking forward to what others have found out in their time with the vasa.

Would love hearing what your friend has to say about their Vasa.

I just had to go read about Vasa's. Interesting birds they are. Might not be the prettiest on the block but appear to be very smart and interactive. Welcome to the forums. We'd love to hear more about your bird!

The eyes get you! I have handled two. Almost bought one as a rehome. This one bird was laying on his back on the bottom of the cage playing with a toy. That was the hook. Should have bought him them. They are not noisy birds compared to many. The call is very melodic...it can be harsh but usually isn't. All I can say is he loves to eat and he gets quite a bit of food!

I read that on the reviews from that old aviary site. Owners stated they eat alot. I wonder if their metabolism is just much higher than average parrots? They seem like alot of fun though I must say.

My understanding is that the metabolism is higher in the vasa than other parrots. I have found ekkies to eat a lot also but my vasa by far has eaten more than I have seen ekkies, aracari or big macaws eat. One article attributed it to high metabolism...they hatch in 18 days and fully weaned by 8 to 10 weeks.

Wow, and I thought (Un)Capes were a bit rare! You have me beat! Looking forward to hearing more about him! And welome!

Uncapes are becoming more popular and they are one nice looking bird.
