Elmo the Amazon
Hi all. We've always kept budgies and cockatiels and I've always kept horses, and have done clicker training with all... but gave up a few years ago due to work commitments. I'm now a stay at home mum and we've just adopted a yellow headed amazon parrot, Elmo..... He's 9 months old and had not had much training. We've had him 4 days now and he's just today started coming to the door for a treat but he seems very nervous. Long haul here I think but he's a fast learner. Hoping to pick up some tips here thankyou

Hello, and welcome!
Glad you found us!

Welcome to the wonderful world of being in the service of the little green monsters, er, I mean Amazons! There are some great threads to get you started on the amazon sub-forum. I highly recommend reading the body language thread and the I love amazons thread.

I have an amazon, a macaw and a senegal. They all communicate differently, so the body language thread is a great place to start getting a feel for the differences between your smaller birds and your new baby. And the key, which I think you already know based on your OP, is patience and persistence. My situation with my amazon is slightly different, but it's taken 3 years to break through to him. That's not unusual. But I came into a house where the amazon and the human were already thick as thieves and I'm the intruder. But that does give you an idea about how stubborn the little feathered fluff balls can be.

As clearly provided above, Amazons require that you learn their Body Language and the best way to set the language in place is to READ IT ALOUD, while setting next to your Amazon. Your Amazon becomes accustom to your voice and you learn Amazon Body Language. I recommend reading to him several times a day for several days. This is also recommended for anyone in your household who will be interacting with your Amazon.

You're starting point should always be: Its Never the Fault of the Amazon! Its Always the Fault of the Human! By starting from this basic point now and forever, the Human will more quickly pick-up on what you are doing wrong and correct it!

At nine months, he is still a bit young to have all the Body Language fully in place, but having a strong understand of an Amazon's Body Language will prepare you to understand it when it appears.

Compete a Web Search for an Avian Vet in your area. If you do not find a Certified Avian Vet, search for an Avian Qualified Vet. Once, you have found one, set-up an Appointment for a New Bird /Well Bird Examination! The goal is to establish a base health status of your Amazon.

Nine months old is an odd age for a young Amazon. Likely been rehomed recently. So, I would recommend that introductions are done at Elmo's rate. Push the seller for as much information as possible as to the Amazon's life prior to coming to your home.

The Amazon Forum is filled with tonnes of useful information. Also, the Amazon Forum is where Amazon's Rule and have more Fun!!!

Welcome to the forums! Make yourself at home and feel free to ask questions! We'd love to see photos of your newest addition.

Thankyou so much all of you, your advice is so much appreciated. I've been reading lots on here especially the body language parts and must say this site is brilliant for parrot advice. Grandaughter came, she's 7 and sat and read wimpy kid to Elmo and he sat on the front perch and looked like he enjoyed it. Off over to the Amazon section now... Thankyou everyone
