New to Parrots

Hi, I'm Fiona..... I'm waiting for my first parrot to be weaned, an African Grey. He should be ready in 4 weeks. Being able to have an African Grey is exciting, something I have wanted to do for a along time... but I am also full of trepidation- I have four small dogs and chickens, but no experience with parrots. I have been studying seriously and the breeders I bought from are available any time for me to ask for help or advice once Gray comes home with me. I have joined your forum and hope to learn more from the experts! I am an artist working from home, I live on a West Coast surf beach in the North Island of New Zealand.

Welcome!! I, too, am awaiting my first birdy, although the egg hasn't even been laid yet. Going to meet the parent birdies tonight, and then hopefully they will produce a baby for me this spring.

My previous experience with other species has taught me that a forum like this is the BEST place to learn. You have the "ear" of so many others who have been there, done that, tried things, failed, and learned from experience. Invaluable!!! Just keep reading, and you will feel more prepared.

Congrats on the choice of an African Grey, they are super smart birdies and I hear they make wonderful pets!! You are braver than I am to get a larger bird for your first, lol. I'm starting small with a lovebird.
