Hello

I brought home a black headed conure and he's very scared wont let me near him, always runs away when I try to get near. I found out he's about 4 yrs old and was neglected by previous owner.

Help please!!:rainbow1:

You would just have to be patient with him sit next to him read him a book and slowly he'll start to trust you my cockatiel kiwi took me about 2 months to get her out of the cage and even now she still gets nervous when I make big movements. You could offer her treats form OUTSIDE his cage and don't make large, sudden movements around him let the bid set the pace don't ever rush him it'll just make him even more scared. Most important thing is to be patient and never give up, it might take a long time but when a bird is bounded to you it is the absolute best feeling in the world, trust me its worth it.

Hi!
By nature, conures thrive on companionship, give him time! At his pace he will come around! Treats help!

Yep, patience young padawan. Parrots work on ther own time scale, which can't be rushed. The thing o rememeber is t also ask yourself -Will this gain trust or break trust. Tying to grab the bird from the cage - trust busting. Waiting until he comes out by himself - trust building. Chasing him around to get him back in to the cage - trust buster. so take your time, above suggestions are excellent.

One is a very important overview of things new parrot owners need to know (and are rarely told) and the other is a link to a thread on building trust....You must understand that these animals are SO much more emotionally complicated than domesticated animals (dogs, cats etc), and bonding/building trust can take MONTHS (for a bird without a super-sketchy history)--intelligence is extremely high when compared to most other animals on the planet.
