Ready to find my first one!!!
Hey there! I have been contemplating getting a bird for a while and after some recent tragedies, I have decided to start researching and figuring out what kind I want to get. SO, any pointers on where to start? I have had pets my whole life and do not mind the "mess" everyone warns me about with birds. I am also home most of the time - I don't work. Anyone wanna point me in a direction to get started?

Welcome to the forum Carebear...and...am very glad you are able to join us.....I have experienced Mother Nature's desire to re-design my community also.....

Coral gave you a good link to start from.....you might want to put 3-6 species that you might be interested in on a list, then compare the positive and negative points of each.....but.....the final deciding factors need to be how much time you have to allot, how much space you have available, realistically what size bird you feel you can handle, whether your landlord will allow a bird, whether your neighbors will complain about the noise factor.....

Many of us were in just your position at one time.....Good luck.....

Welcome to the forum, Carebear. You've come to the right place for questions and guidelines. :)

My heart skipped a beat when I saw you are from the Heartland of America. My deepest sympathies on the tragedies that transpired in Moore the other week. :(

I think you will have fun learning all about the different parrots out there. IF you have nearby stores that carry parrots, why not visit them? There will be a bird show in September in Tulsa:
September 7th, 2013 - Tulsa, OK - Indian Summer Bird Fair
Green Country Event Center, 12000 East 31st Street
Hours: 9 to 5

ask lots of questions... this is a great place with some seriously knowledgeable people!

Welcome to the forum. My only advice to let your bird pick you, it's the most amazing thing to have an instant bond. Good luck and finding your bird.
