Hello everyone, my name is Martin and I currently reside in Miami, Florida. Wanted to take a quick minute to introduce myself, so here goes.
Born and raised in Medellin, Colombia, I've been in contact with birds small and large alike pretty much all of my life. Few family members kept macaws, I've interacted with them plenty, but never cared for one. While I always found birds interesting and have kept a variety of them (currently we keep 4 cockatiels, but have kept various species of small birds in the past), my interest has always been snakes. More specifically speaking, I kept a hefty collection of boids of all sizes, concentrating mainly on Boa Constrictors (B.c.imperator & B.c.constrictor).
Making an already long story as short as possible, I got married, wife despises snakes, had to make a choice, chose the wife. Hurt me pretty bad to get rid of my collection, had a little over 90k invested in snakes and cages I had collected, bred, traded, etc. over the years I didn't even bother selling them. I felt better giving them to someone I was sure would care for them as I cared for them, rather then make a buck from some random stranger without knowing anything about them or what kind of enviroment I was sentencing my babies to.
Positive side to this, is my wife has kept birds all her life (I've known her since we were children, as she is also from Medellin, Colombia) and has agreed on us getting a large parrot.
I'm very meticulous when it comes to caring for my animals, so I'm well aware I can't just dive in head first into a species I know nothing about, so for the last couple of months I've read countless caresheets, articles and even some macaw keeper stories to get a grasp on what Im dealing with. For the time being, my sister just acquired an A.chloropterus which I can get some hands on experience with before I make my purchase.
One thing I'm certain of is the species of Macaw I wish to look into and that's Ara, more specifically I'd like to acquire a A.glaucogularis.
I apologize in advance for the long read, look forward to reading different threads and learn as much as possible from the more experienced enthusiasts until I'm able to gain my own experience.
Thanks! bye!
