Sulfur Crested Cockatoo
Hello forum members :) My name is Judy and I'm from Western NY. I found Ziva (supposedly 2 1/2 yr old female Sulfur Crested Cockatoo) on Craigslist 3 days ago. Today is my second full day with her and I'm already madly in love! As far as I know I am her 3rd and hopefully forever home. The woman I got her from had her for only 3 weeks before realizing that she wasn't a bird person. Ziva is not my first bird but she is my first parrot. I had a cockatiel for almost 20 years and had no idea how different they are from cockatoos! She's so much more social and loving. She already says pretty bird and barks like a dog...and she does this head weaving thing that kinda looks like dancing. It took her a couple days to adjust to the dogs but now she doesn't seem to really mind them unless they move fast and I'm confident that she'll adjust fully soon. I can't get over how quickly she seems to have made herself comfortable...today is really only my second day with her and she already comes for scritching and attention. She has some bald patches on her legs (the woman I got her from said the previous owner claimed it was because he was away too much and she was feather plucking), but I'm confident that this issue will resolve itself. Can anyone tell me how often they moult? Also does anyone know how to find out info from the data on their leg bands? I was told that she's a female but I'm really unclear as to how to definitively sex them other than eye color and I don't know what to compare hers to...
Any and all advice, comments, or info would be most greatly appreciated!!! :)

The femaleshave a lighter brown eye while males is almost black. The leg bands these days don't give a lot of info. The only way to really know is by contacting leg band manufactures but they're backup right now. It also depends if the breeder is even willing to contact you. They like to bob their head up and down and do a cute little dance then shake their heads too, they do that when they're excited.

Welcome to the forum!!!! Sounds like your heading off to a good start. :)

Thanks! :D I'm thrilled to be here and to be Ziva's human. I'll try to get a better look and maybe even a pic for others to help me evaluate. I have been repeating a phrase and she just started making noises like she's trying to figure out how to repeat it...she's truly amazing!

Here are a couple pics :) In the light her eyes seem pretty light brown especially closer to the iris.
