Hello, I am new to the forum, but I wanted to introduce my eclectus, Aria.



I have only had her for about a week now, and she is almost 9 months old. She is a rescue that came from a home that didn't do much with her, but leave her in a cage. She will step up out of her cage, most of the time, although she is still rather nippy. She is getting much better, with me anyway, about not biting. Also working on trying to convince her that fresh foods are better than pellets, but all in good time. At least she is eating pellets as opposed to seed, which is what she was eating when she arrived at the rescue.

Hi welcome, to you and your flock.

You and Brittany741 have a fair bit in common as in recently rescuing an Ekkie. I'm sure she will be along shortly or if you prefer you could search her posts. But we also have a fair few very experienced owners here who are always pleased to help.

Keep going with the fresh foods, there is loads on here about that and also with her training. Looking forward to seeing more of your girl in the future.

I really think she is going to be a wonderful bird, once she gets used to being handled. She wants attention, she just seems unsure of how to get it appropriately. When I first brought her home, she had trouble even perching on my arm while I was walking, like she had never done it. I thought that was a sad thing.

Aria is exquisite! Think of how much better she will look and behave once acclimated to an Eclectus-friendly diet. Their dietary issues are well chronicled in this forum.

I spent several months searching for a female rescue, to no avail. The one in my state was not a good match (arthritis in her feet make her unable to perch/shoulder ride), and of course most rescues will not adopt to out of state parronts. I found about 5 females, total, on various sources...and about 7-8 males. Ekkies are rare as hens teeth, so I had to get a baby. Good news is that they usually get adopted quickly. I responded to a new posting out of state last week and she already had three families interested...gone in a week.

The transition from pellets to fresh food can be difficult with some birds. It might take a while. In the meantime, are the pellets she's eating at least organic and uncolored?

Yes, as Uglow and Plumsmum have mentioned, female ekkies are often misunderstood. But when raised in a home with understanding, patience and love, they can make wonderful additions to the family. Maya is quite the beloved member of our household.

Glad she has a great new home! I'm always surprised to see birds under a year old already having multiple homes! I know I shouldn't be but I just can't get over how people think animals are something to get rid of when they get bored with them.

She is already transitioning to our home very well. I think she is amused that the dogs will eat anything she throws out of her bowl. If they sit by her cage, she seems to throw more than usual on the floor, for whatever reason.

Right now she is on Mazuri parrot maintenance pellets. I am not sure if they are organic, but they are dye free. It is what the rescue that had her was feeding her, so I didn't want to take that away from her just yet. If someone could let me know what they think of the Mazuri products, I would appreciate it. I am willing to switch her, but like I said, I didn't want to change everything on her as soon as she came home.

I think she is a sweet girl. I will say that she needs someone who isn't willing to let her push them around, but I think that is true of most birds at one point or another.

After many, many hours of research, I decided to switch my entire flock to Golden'Obles. The ingredients are not only Eclectus-friendly, but they taste great. Yes, I tried them.

Not having dyes and added vitamins is only part of the important of choosing a pellet; there are also many, many ingredients which impact our Ekkies negatively.

As for being misunderstood, YES. As someone who's had birds a long time, all I ever heard was how female Eclectus were beautiful but vicious. My experience couldn't be farther from that! Had I never been fed this misinformation, I likely would have had Eclectus exclusively for a majority of my bird experience.

Persie is also a bit off balance. She weighed 428g this week so she isn't a light bird.

I do suggest weighing your bird weekly at a minimum. With the upcoming dietary changes, it's imperative to keep a close eye on her weight to ensure she doesn't lose any. Add in the fact she is still a juvenile, and a weighing routine becomes that much more important. I got a new scale on Amazon for under $20 and it works better than my $50 stainless Kitchenaid scale.

Go check out my thread about mash (I think I have a problem) to see what I did. Feeding my Ekkies is now as easy as feeding pellets to any other bird.

I also suggest beginning the transition to Golden'Obles. I switched Persie to 99% fresh food from 100% junk bagged hookbill food overnight. My logic was, she's already having a huge change and if I make the routine the correct way from day one, she may be more accepting than if she gets the junk from me and then transitions.

Mash is easy and with the right ingredients and method, your bird should be beak down and tail up immediately. Drizzle a small amount of melted coconut oil over your mash and mix it in. It's bird crack.
