Newbie here

Not that I'm an expert on conures molting into color :) but the fact that she has a completely green back still, in spite of quite a bit of yellow/orange already on the front.

So if she's a jenday, or even a Sunday, her wings will stay green and her body this color? Or will she turn yellow?

I know I'm overloading with the pictures but I thought maybe more detail would be better

Here's a (bad) picture of a sun next to a jenday. (Jenday on the right, sun on the left.)

If your baby is a jenday, which is likely, then she will keep the green wings, and the head/neck/chest will turn into a bright yellow/orange after a molt or two. :) I've had both, and they're both stunning, so either way your baby is gorgeous!!

I would just THINK that if she was a Sun, she would at least have SOME yellow on the back by now, not none... Green back is suspect :20: lol

She totally looks like a jenday, but I won't know 100% until she's an adult.:orange:

She's a 4 month old sun conure!!!! (4 months and 1 week old to be exact!) Of course she's going to "look like a jenday"! LOL All her coloration's point to being a sun! :)

She has the orange face of a sun conure and an orange stomach of a sun! Jendays are a little more reddish in color. :)

Here is a picture of a baby jenday. Face is a little more yellow and look at that red-orange stomach!

Here's a thread where someone has two Sunday conures. One bird looks more like a sun, except face is a little too yellow, wings a little too green, and stomach a little too red. The other looks more like a jenday, but the wings are little too yellow and the face too orange.

Here is a picture of a sun conure, a jenday conure, and their sunday offspring. You can see how the offspring have coloration's of both parents.

So you definitely have a little sun on your hands! :) Don't worry, she'll start to color up with her first molt, which should occur any time between 6-12 months of age! And even if she remains green for longer than normal, by the time she's 2-6 years old, she should have her full adult colors!

Ok, I see, she's only 4 months old. There's a point there.
Also I was going by the drawn picture with the juvenile Jenday not having much red on it's belly yet. I noticed the photograph did have red as a juvenile.

The comparison drawn photo is good, but a little confusing.

Many people are also starting to see many pied sun conure chicks which have varying degrees of yellow and get confused when their non-pied sun conure chicks don't look the same.

Pedro, an older member of this forum, breeds pied sun conures in Australia. Here's a post where Pedro included a picture of a 2 month old sun conure with more yellow than adult sun conures!

And another post showing extremely yellow unweaned/unfledged chicks!

Another member here recently posted a sun conure chick that was *so* green, I was surprised! Never before seen such a green baby! But of course the chick is indeed a sun!

Wow! Thank you so much for all the insight! Because she isn't even 5 months yet, I haven't wanted to classify her yet, so I will wait. However, all of the info is super useful! But this is her this morning :)

I also wonder why she dislikes veggies? She will just shred and play with them. I tried pureeing them with some papaya, for which she goes nuts, and nothing. It's like she knows!

Hi, Welcome to you and Pipa! She's a beautiful baby. I have one very similar to yours who looks more Jenday than sun although I seen chili's parents and she's definitely a sun. So I assume with the future molts both of our babies will look more as they should :)

Here's the little sun conure that I mentioned that is *so* green!

bettietheripper, Pipa might be eating some of her veggies without you realizing it! It's better that she plays and chews with them than ignores them! Trust me! :D

You can try presenting the vegetables in various manners though, such as hanging them on a skewer, stuffing them into toys, chopping into large chunks, chopping into small chunks, slicing them, mixing with other foods, etc!

I have mostly smaller birds, so I tend to through everything through the food processor (fruits and veggies!) and chop it up fine, then mix with cooked grains and healthy legumes. This way, everything is about "bite sized" for the little guys. Conures seem to eat this just fine, too! (except my last batch was "too wet" for the conures and one was less crazy about that than the other!)

Songlake- we will just have to wait! But her head is rapidly turning yellow-er, and her tail is suddenly very blue!

Monica- my name as well :) what kind of veggies and legumes do you feed your babies? Also, will be nippy behavior stop? I tell her no and try to distract her away from the area she bites, and even have attempted time out but she keeps it up?

Hi Monica from another Monica! :D

Those are cute pics! I would suggest investing in an aviator harness though and teaching Pipa to wear the harness while outside. It's not really a good idea to take birds outside unrestrained, clipped or flighted, unless they are recall trained and have a *strong* recall.

I have a video of Charlie wearing a Feather Tether, although I also own the Aviator Harness.

Here's a list I put together of safe foods, although it's not complete! I haven't used *all* the foods on the list, but have used several! I usually make a mash recipe that includes grains, legumes, vegetables and some fruits and feed that to my birds. For you, it would probably be easier to share what you eat, giving different fruits and veggies every day, feeding some healthy grains and legumes whenever you eat them. Things like that.

As far as the nipping? Ya, they can, but at the same time, they may still bite or nip years down the road. It may help to teach him target training and try to always have some foot toys, beads, bottle caps, leather strips or pieces of leather or other things to play with while you have him with you. That way, you can try to keep stuffing his mouth with objects, keeping his beak too busy to nip you! :D

This thread, if you scroll down, there are 4 videos of target training macaws, although one macaw is being taught to target a stick while the other is learning to touch a syringe. Same base training, different outcomes. :)

Monica, which one do you think is better for a Macaw, Feather Tether or Aviator Harness?

Did you ever see the type that attach to rings on the bird foot?

Joe

Look at this video:

EDIT: (not that I think these are good just wanted to hear if you know about them)

The Aviator Harness is safer because it is *ONE* piece.

The Feather Tether is easier to put on for me because it's two pieces, and the harness part has a clip that makes it easier to move the strip beneath the wings without touching the wings.

Charlie doesn't like the Aviator harness much simply because there is no easy way to avoid the strap from touching his wings, and that's what bothers him.

Between the two though, I'd recommend the Aviator!

As far as Marc's leashes go, ya I know of them! There are concerns that they aren't as safe as a harness is because a parrot's legs are not as strong as raptors, so there is concern that the harness could seriously hurt a bird's legs... especially if a bird gets to the end of the leash and the leash snaps tight. I do know that the leashes have a bungee cord to prevent that.

I don't know of anyone who has bought one.

Is a flight suit better than an aviator bird harness?

Not necessarily.... They may be good for preventing poopy accidents inside, but not good for going outside! Flight suits are held together with velcro, and the leash part is put into the velcro area, making a less than safe product if the velcro were to come apart.
