Skye - Blue Quaker
Just brought home the second baby, no name yet. Blue Quaker also
Hello all, my name is Jon and my lovely other half is Colleen. About 3 months ago, our beautiful daughter came over for her weekly visit with the grands kids ( we weren't home from work yet) and sends us a picture via text of a rather battered wayward Quaker that she found perched on our fence line, clearly a domesticated bird as she was able to walk right up to it, it climbed on her hand and then anxiously to her shoulder for said picture. Of course daughter and wifey are thinking "new family member" "I" on the other hand am thinking about the bird and it's lost home/family, so we secure the bird for its own safety in a small dog crate, we have two pups, an 11# Pomeranian and a 130# American bull. We live in a rather rural community but it's rather tight knit, so I immediately posted the very picture my daughter sent us on a community social media page in search of the rightful owner, as well as posted a printed copy at our local mom and pop convenience store. Meanwhile I'm searching Craigslist and others alike trying to find an appropriate cage on the thrift, researching diet and so on. All of my researching revealed to me many things I did not know about Quakers. Well within 36 hours we found the rightful parents of the bird, and I returned "Terry" to his owners. My daughter however, and even my wife a little, were crushed. So after some talking between the wife and I, we agreed to do more research and decided that having a bird in our lives now that the kids are grown and "almost" gone lol, would be a nice addition to our "almost" empty nest. So goes the search for a private avarian breeder with great reviews and credentials and 3 months later we have 2 young hand fed quakers. The first, now named Skye came home about 3 weeks ago, and the baby deemed our daughters came home 2 days ago, both are blues. We are hopeful for interaction with other Quaker parents in a positive light, as our social media page participation has not been quite so positive

What a wonderful story! I love it!
It's great you were able to return the first quaker to their rightful home - their owners would be so thankful :) And even better that it acted as a catalyst for your own research and wee friends.
Quakers are awesome - I'm in love with their architecture. Ringneck's have my heart though and we always find another one in need of a home when we're ready to add to our flock.....MBS - it's a real thing ;)
Welcome :)

Hello, and welcome to the Parrot Forums family! Knowing how crushed I'd have been if I'd lost either of my birds, I was really happy to see that you managed to reunite that lost quaker with his family! That was awesome.

You've come to the right place for positive interaction, not only with Quaker parronts, but with keepers of parrots of every size and type. We look forward to lots of stories as both birds grow and mature, and many pics to match!

Welcome and be welcomed, especially after a story like that. Quakers are great little parrots, need a lot of socializing and setting limits. They love to construct stuff with popsicle sticks cuz they make communal nests in the wild. We have lots of quaker owners here, so ask any questions you might have. And read read read the stickies at the top of each sub forum. Good luck.

Oh! Make sure to search out threads from one of our resident quaker experts and fellow mod, Allee. I think you'll find her stories quite informative... and often outright entertaining as well.

Welcome Jon and Colleen, thanks for an awesome story! The temporary loss of a beloved companion is devastating, your efforts were a huge comfort!

You'll find this forum highly supportive and interactive. Glad you joined!!

We thank you all for the warm welcome. Colleen and I just spent another hour or so with both our birds out in common territory trying to get them acclimated to one another. While they were placed together in the same "mess box" by the breeder, they have been separated for approximately 3 weeks, roughly the same as their difference in hatch dates, and Skye is reluctant to welcome the previous (short term) roomy. But we're working at it day by day with greater success each day, although not by leaps and bounds.

Welcome!
Glad you found us!
And glad that little bird somehow found YOU!
You're on my HERO-LIST!
LOVE this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
