Nike a Hawk Head Parrot (Deroptyus accipitrinus)
2 min video....sometimes I miss the antics associated with having an Amazon.

Nike helping me edit the video....or nesting, take your pick.

I wish Darwin played even that much...takes her at least a month to stop being terrified of anything new, and then we only find the chewed up parts, never see her actually playing:(
How old is Nike again?

We think that she's in her 20's.

So is Darwin, she turned 26 this year. Perhaps her being a wild breeder all her life has something to do with it. It is always so nice to see Nike, playing, sitting, doing absolutely anything! Your pictures of her are always amazing!

Thanks. She was camera shy today, I took some more boring preening videos. When she get's herself into a ball and feathers going everywhere, I just want to grab her and squeeze her.

This is one of my favorite pics...just out of a bath and peering from behind her rope.

And this is the first pic I ever took of her. Just home, sitting on my shoulder, and was fluffing her feathers when I snapped this.

As to her age, when I first spoke with the woman I got her from she said 13 years but after doing a bunch of googling I found a post from her where she stated that she was 24 years. I've had her 2 years so she *may* be somewhere between 15-26 or so years old.

Terry, I don't think I've ever seen a pic of Darwin....quick, go snap one ;)

Thank-you!!! I so needed a Hawkhead fix, and today, I got video and a picture! So worth it!

So, Nicky's going into hair styling also! Kind of edgy, but it looks good on you! :D

Always did love Modern Math!!! :D

I love those pics of Nike! Darwin's age wasn't disclosed to us correctly, either. We were told she was 17, but when she arrived her band said 22.
Unfortunately, I only have a couple of good pics of Darwin, she is terrified by the phone so we stopped taking them and upsetting her.

She is beautiful. Our birds are much alike. I found out quickly that Nike would bite me (my ear) if I picked up a phone. And as for a phone or camera, as soon as she notices me with one in hand she stops doing whatever prompted me to get the camera.

Nike has a band, no idea what the numbers mean.

What does Darwin weigh? Nike runs around 195-200 grams so she's a little small according to the reference material I've read.

I think we need a Hawk Head species forum ;)

The last time we weighed Darwin she weighed 225, so not a huge difference from Nike. We were lucky with her band, it was easy to read the year on it, although some of our birds have bands that make no sense.
Does Nike have a hard time adapting to change? Darwin does not adapt well at all. When we moved, it took months for her to come out of her cage again. We can't move anything in her cage around as she will sit on the bottom, absolutely terrified. New toys have to work their way into the cage by being hung outside at a distance and slowly moved closer until we can put them in the cage. I don't think she was socialized at all in her previous home.
She seems to be happy now, comes out and sits on her cage, and chats, she can say Hello and Darwin..lol.
I agree, we need a HH forum, although you and I may be the only ones there for now so I'm not sure if that would work!

It has long been rumored that Years ago, during a certain ten year America's Conference of Amazons. The Island Amazons showed-up with a 40' Shipping Container of Certified Officer's Series, British Navy, Island Rum (90 proof).

During the last evening's Business Meeting, and with great luck -or- great planning, just prior to the Rum running-out. The Island Parrot Block presented a proposal to include the Island Parrots as part of the Family Amazona. The measure passed without objection, or for that matter, discussion. And, that's the story that I had hear and that's all I am saying about that subject!

That said, seeing an opening, it was also rumored, that a well-juiced group of Hawkheads make a like proposal and although it was also approved that evening. Even still today, there has been strong debate regarding whether they are or are not part of the family. Commonly right-up to the point that a bottom of Rum appears from what seems out-of-thin air! -Or that group of Island Amazons sitting at the next table. :D

FYI: A Bottom of Rum is the last bottle in a case of Rum and is believed to be a bit stronger proof that the others in that cases!

Sorry Bill, I recalled the humor and well, what can I say!

Nike is pretty good with change though it will take some time for her with toys. I have a shreadable toy in her cage now for 6 months and she hasn't touched it....one dat it will be gone ;) I have a toy to hang up by her boing but when I put it there she won't stay on the boing. But the toy she was playing with today has been there only 2 days...so who knows what goes through their heads.

Nike says Nike, What are you doing, Night night Nike, Hi, step up, scratch and what's up....all from a previous life, she hasn't picked up anything from us.

We take her camping in a travel cage and it doesn't phase her in the least.

That's awesome that she adapts so well! She and Dar seem so alike in some ways, and so different in others. I guess that's what makes them all the individuals we love so much:)

Steven, I love that story!

She is so beautiful [emoji7][emoji7][emoji7]

Bill...Nike's "playing" video..."Are you crazy Dad?? You're filming me! I'm not playing"!!
And OMG!..the one after her bath/shower!!! She looks like she just came from a 1980's Disco!! "Hair" all poofed up and fluffy!
I have never met a "Hawky",or even seen a close-up photo. I must admit,Nike is quite the looker ;)
Thanks for sharing!!!
Oh,and I totally agree..there SHOULD be a separate sub-forum for Hawk Heads..even if it's only for you and Terry lol
