Hello, birdie owners!

My fascination with parrots only started a few months ago, when I saw a green cheek conure for the first time at my local Petsmart. Compared to the other birds he was bold and curious, climbing all over his cage and looking straight at me. When I put my hand against the bars he went to it immediately and started nibbling gently, then rubbed his head on my fingers. I was in loooove.

Unfortunately I still live at home, with a parent who is horrified by the mess birds can make. It's gonna be a while before I can move out and adopt a feathered baby of my own. For now I'm just doing as much reading as possible, and of course, watching adorable videos.

Welcome! You'll find this a very informative website . Do not buy from petshops, I learned that the hard way. I got my budgies from petco and they had a bunch of behavior issues also afraid of hands. Not only that but because they are exposed to many different kinds of people and animals they can have a sickness hiding and you don't know the age!

I too did my research prior to bringing home my first bird. When I did I brought home a 10 week old Green Cheek and about 10 months later I brought home another one. You are correct that they are so easy to fall in love with. Right now I have one on my shoulder and the other is snacking away about 4 feet from me. They are the loves of my life!

Thank you for doing your homework first!!! Give it time, be patient and before you know it you will have a bird of your own.

You might try finding a local parrot rescue that will allow you to volunteer helping take care of the birds and socialize them! And they can help guide you in how to properly take care of them! It would be a great way to take care of birds without having to upset anyone in your family!

I too am new to parrots (and the forum), but I have also been in love for years. I just turned 25 today and only now do I have the time/space/money to take on the responsibility. Hang in there, it will happen for you too Some rescues, depending on where you are, will allow you to do some volunteer work to spend some time with birds. I have worked in loads of vet clinics and got most of my face-time that way. It taught me a lot about what species I prefer and what kind of commitment I would be making when the right time and bird came along.

The closest parrot rescue is too far for me to get to, but I have thought about volunteering! And I definitely will once I stop procrastinating and finally get my driver's license.

I agree that either buying from a good breeder or adopting from a rescue is the way to go when acquiring any kind of pet.

I'm 22 and still trying to get my life together after dropping out of university. I look forward to being able to care for one or more of these wonderful creatures someday.
