After sharing the story of my beloved budgies, I wanted to share another. I scrolled through photos of all my birds, trying to decide who's story I want you all to know about, and then I came across a picture of Nutmeg. I had to create this tribute to her, no matter how much it hurts. So here we go.
Nutmeg was a playful, energetic, acrobatic white-bellied caique, the little clown of the flock. I got her when she was 9 years old, from a local parrot rescue. Her first home, for the first couple years of her life, kept her in a small cage and never let her out. She was on an all-seed diet and was not tame. Her family was fond of her, but didn't understand what proper bird care was, and ended up neglecting her, despite them thinking it was the right thing to do. When Nutmeg was about 2 or 3 years old, they got bored of her, so they put her up on Craigslist. From there, she was sold to another family, who then gave her to an elderly neighbor as a gift. The old woman loved her dearly, but unfortunately passed away after a few years. The family who originally bought Nutmeg off of Craigslist surrendered her to the bird rescue, and that's where we met. After the death of her owner, she was very stressed and had begun to pluck her feathers. She was very fearful of me and everything else, and refused to come out of her cage. But from the moment I met her, I loved her, and I had to take her home. (I was looking to get a caique for a while, did not impulse buy) After a lot of effort, I managed to bond with her, stopped her plucking, and she had returned to the clown she always was supposed to be. She loved all foods and treats, wasn't picky at all. She liked to interact with my budgies and Lilla, but would mostly ignore Dash. I harness trained her and taught her to open her wings on command, wave, and go through a slinky. She was the greatest girl in the world.
I had owned Nutmeg for about five years, she was 14 years old. She had a long life ahead of her. One day, I noticed she had a tail bob, and her breathing seemed heavier than normal. I took her to the vet right away, but my normal vet was closed so I had to find another one. There was no avian vet, so I had no choice but to see a reptile vet. He took one look, told me that she wasn't sick and that she looked fine, and told me to come back if she started to show more symptoms. After trying to find her an avian specialist vet for a while more, all there was were reptile vets and dog-and-cat vets. I did try to contact two other people, but one never responded while the other said the same thing as the first person. I took her back home and tried to make her comfortable. I decided that maybe she would be fine for just one day, until my regular clinic opened tomorrow. That night, I put the birds in their cages and went to bed. When I woke up, I got out of bed and went to greet my birds. When I went to check on Nutmeg, there she lay, on the bottom of her cage, not breathing, not moving. It breaks my heart that she could have passed with so many years ahead of her, and that her illness could have progressed so quickly into death. And I still can't forgive myself for not getting her to a vet, not trying harder to save her. I love you, my sweet little girl. You meant the world to me. Fly free, you will be missed.

I apologize for making this such a long thread, I didn't even realize until I posted.
Absolutely no apology required, foxglove! What a beautiful tribute to Nutmeg, how gorgeous she was too. Oh I feel your pain, I lost my baby Baci the GCC under not dissimilar circumstances, that little man meant the whole world to me too. We must try not to blame ourselves - it is clear to me that you did everything for Nutmeg that you possibly could have done. The passing of time does help but the pain in the heart always remains. We will see them all again at the Rainbow Bridge, foxglove, I believe that most sincerely. Hugs and love to you and your flock from me and mine ❤️ 🙏

I'm so very sorry for your loss of Nutmeg, what a beautiful girl. You did everything you could do for her, and she had such a wonderful home with you where she was loved. I also lost one of my babies due to my vet being away, and she was the only qualified vet anywhere around.
Thank you so much for sharing Nutmeg's story with us, I'm so glad she ended up in your loving home.
Sending much love and comforting hugs to you.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
So very sorry Nutmeg passed without competent vet care despite diligent efforts. You rescued Nutmeg from benevolent neglect, shared wonderful years, earned her unconditional love.

I'm very sorry to hear what happened to Nutmeg - fly high, little one.

It must've been very painful losing little Nutmeg, you have all of our support here. I'm sure you did all you could, and don't you dare put the blame on yourself!

We'd love to hear more stories about your birdies, be it good or bad. Bad ones so you lay it off your chest and for us to support you, or even learn something from the story, and the good ones so we all share a good laugh and smiles.

Be good Nutmeg, make sure you say hi to the gang.
