I *THINK* Nelson is sneezing at night. Sounds odd but at night when i get ready for bed i hear odd noises which sounds like sneezing. I figured out it is coming from Nelsons direction and not Barrys but i have not heard /seen him do it during the day. When i hear it i turn the lights on and it stops... It is pretty regular when the lights are off but when i turn them on and sit watching him there is nothing. This is why i am so confused and haven't rushed him to the vets. He has no nasal discharge and is his normal self, eating well etc.

Any ideas what this is? So confused!!

My boy had that during 4 days sneezing like 10 times a day, I must said he was very stressed as all was new to him and also the weather was very cold during that period

I did nothing just observed closely to any behavior changes, as long he has no nasal discharges i wouldn't worry :green2:

Continued sneezing (This is not always a sign of illness. Parrots may sneeze for a variety of reasons: dust, pollen, airborne irritants, change in weather, dry air or they may have a small feather irritating their nares. Ensure you monitor your Eckie closely to rule out irritants.) source http://eclectusparrotbreeders.com/eclectus-health-info.html

They do tend to sneeze a bit due to the fact where their nostril is, it's covered by their feathers. I do watch them sneeze a bit then start scratching a bit with their toes. Then everything is fine afterwards. If you do worry about him, a vet check isn't a bad idea to give you a peace of mind!

Hey, Freespin. I agree with MikeyTN about that vet check, especially since you don't seem quite certain that the sound Nelson is making is really just a sneeze. Also, how late into the night do these sounds carry on? Is it possibly messing with his sleep cycle?

Also, are there any environmental changes that occur at night where you are? I know it likely gets cooler, but there might be other factors at play. Does he sleep in a different cage than the one he uses during the day? Is there anything new in his/your environment that he is only exposed to at night?

He does it when I go to bed around 9.30. It's summer here so not very cold at night and I do t think it last to long, I wake a lot during the night but don't hear it then. I rearranged his perches and he is sleeping slightly higher than he was. Also have added some bamboo and new toys but I thought if it was an allergy it would be more regular and constant. I went to bed at about 9 last night just before it was fully dark and didn't hear him doing it then...

Oh and he is in the same cage at night.

You're right about the allergies. The sneezing would have to be something more consistent... unless he's only exposed to whatever it is at night. Something subtle enough to remain undetected by you. Not very likely, but definitely possible.

Have you ruled out any of the possibilities suggested by the quote in solrac13's post? (Airborne irritants, dry air, feather irritating nares, etc?)

Also, any chance of using a voice memo app to record the sounds with your cell? That way we could all listen in and offer our opinions on whether the sound truly is a sneeze.
