Hi ,

Went to post a question about why does my parrot offer his foot. I googled this this morning and the 1st that came up was my own question that I actually posted in here back in 2009 lol.
But would like to ask again because reading through the comments from my question back in 2009, seems many are saying its because they want to step up or be picked up.
Not quite so I think in my parrots case, which makes it all the more confusing as to why he does it ??
He usually offers his foot when Im up close and chatting to him or kissing his beak. But when he offers his foot, I usually take it and kiss it like crazy and let it go..... but if I think he wants to be picked up instead, I go to get him to step up but he runs like a bat out of hell ??????
Is he just playing ??? I really dont think he wants to step up somehow. Although he learnt this command quite young.
He even says at times without offering his foot " Come with Robyn" so I go to get him and he takes off. Other times he will say " Come with Robyn and hop on me and climb up to my shoulder.
He is a very happy boy but is now competing with another male ekky we have and they at times fight but tend to fly to outdo each other in the morning, sort of playing I guess.
Any views of why Jack raises his foot ? Is it just because he knows Im going to kiss it like crazy and thats what he wants ? Its definitely not to be picked up and many others say their birds want.
Thanks ,
Robyn

Sounds like he's turned the foot thing into a game for himself.....

Chico raises his right foot for many reasons. He will do this when he wants something to stop like when I am exercising him. Poor boy is out of shape and starts to huff and puff when I fly him back and forth too vigorously. Most times I imagine his foot just needs a little massage. They must get tired as they are on them all the time. Maybe kisses or a nibble? Just guessing. I am sure it doesn't mean he wants up. When he wants up he just climbs to where he wants to go. If he can't get there, since he is still learning to fly and chooses not too, he just squats down and flutters his wings waiting for some attention. I hope once he becomes more confident with his flying ability he will just fly to where he wants to go.

Which foot is your boy lifting up?

Pickles is an Eclectus and kind of does the same thing. He has just recently learned to ask to be picked up by raising his right foot. Its so cool. Almost like sign language. But I think he is actually the one who has trained me that right foot in the air means "pick me up mom" or "come give me attention." Sometimes I'll go over when he raises his foot and he will run around the cage when I try to pick him up. Like he is making me work for it. He always gives in though, and after running in a circle or two will jump right on my hand. Maybe he just gets excited that he can now command me to come to him with just a little foot wave. So adorable!

Rupee sometimes holds her foot out for no reason. It's like she lifts it up to reach for something or itch and then just forgets about it. It's quite sweet.
