Oh dear...how long after they breed?

Okay, well as you all know I sort of rescue/rehomed 2 tiels 2 weeks ago.

I don't know anything about these tiels, except what I've learned since I took them in, I figured the darker pied was definitely a male and the lighter one, I wasn't sure yet.

Well today, my hubby walked in the house and said "There they were, going at it." I'm like...UH UHHH! NO Way! He said, YES, I wish I'd have whipped out my phone and video'd it! hahahha!

Sooooo....2 males wouldn't do it would they? Assuming, not...how long after they breed will the female lay eggs?

I'm just curious...and...well this will sound awful, but I really don't want baby tiels and I didn't know one was a female here...so after she lays her clutch...if she does, is there a time that would be safe for me to remove the eggs so they don't hatch?

I'm soo glad I rescue/homed these tiels...they are so healthy and obviously COMFORTABLE and HAPPY in their new environment. They are on a very healthy diet now...and well...well...I guess giving me babies is one way to "thank" me. Hahahahah!

Mating is not the same as breeding.
They mate for fun all year round, only lay eggs if they have a suitable nesting spot.
Just don't add a nest box.
If she starts laying, that's chronic egg laying which is really really bad for them ( grrr, one of my new budgies is one so I'm going to have to figure out what's causing it ) and will kill them eventually. It really depends on the bird, but 99.9% won't lay and sit without a nest box.

And by the way, two males do sometimes um....
I have a male-male bonded pair now and I used to have a female-female bonded pair ( budgies ).

So just don't add a nest box/snugglehut/happyhut and you should be fine.

Hi,

I had same-sex Lovebirds and Tiels do it all the time before. The female-female pair I had really confused me. They were sweet, fed each other, sat together nearly all the time. They laid lots 8 eggs.

If yours are indeed a male-female pair, it would take around 21 days after the first egg is laid before you can expect chicks.

Hmmm....okay, so I'm reading responses and cracking up! Never easy to tell with birds. They don't have a next box, and last night I took out their huts, they never even explored them anyway, that I saw anyway.

Sooo..I also read something about the size of stools with females before they lay? And there are some MONDO size stools on the cage paper this morning, They have both been on the cage floor, ripping at the paper...but I don't see them doing anything with it. Other then the cage floor or their food dish, there is no where she could lay her eggs.

I guess time will tell with this one.

Naskiska, seeing there is a lot of confusion regarding the advice given here. You do have a hen bird as she is the one that is responsible for the large droppings.

Hellooo!

Well, no eggs, I did not put anything in the cage to stimulate nesting and a couple days ago, I decided I wanted to start hand taming them, so I caught them both and clipped their wings and put them in separate smaller cages side by side.

'Bout broke my heart to make such a transition with them, since they've been doing so well! However, I am happy to report that within an hour or so, they were back to their normal chipper selves and I've been working on handling them each day with amazing progress!

I'm confident that within a couple weeks time I'll have some new pictures of them perched on my hand.

They are soo happy, and that female is such an acrobat! She's always hanging upside down from the roof of the cage! The male is trying to make some other sounds, besides the same tone chirp they both did all the time. He greeted me with quite the song this morning while I was getting ready for work.

Oh, that article that Pedro linked was EXCELLENT! THANK YOU Pedro! And I will say, although I've always known my lutino is a female and my Chicken Little a Male, there is a DEFINITE weight difference between them. I absolutely know since handling both the "rescue" tiels that the one IS a female, just based on the weight difference.

So if I decided to let my hens breed, I wonder what we'd get crossing a Lutino Hen and a Cinnamon Pied Hen with either of my gray pied males?

Hhhmm....that darn curiosity always gets the best of me!

But for now, no eggs, no breeding, no worries and 4 very very happy healthy lovely tiels

They could lay on the bottom of the cage, they do not need a nest box to lay eggs! But it's better to get a nest box cause they freak easily. That's if you want to raise them. I was forced to give my pair a box cause they were mean to all the other birds chasing them everywhere...box give them security! They can start laying within days after mating. The eggs can hatch anywhere from 18-28 days. I had some hatching at 14 days years ago....

Thank you Mikey, I figured if she was going to lay, not much was going to stop her, I thought I'd remembered reading somewhere that a hen WILL lay her eggs in the bottom of a cage. I waited 5 days and didn't see any eggs and decided to clip/separate/tame them. I just want them willing to perch on my hand, makes it so much easier to move them around when they are tame.

They are currently in separate smaller cages set side by side, each day I handle them one at a time and I can tell it's not going to be long before they are both hopping on my finger to come out for their "Tiel walkabout/treat" time.

That's when I lay out a towel and sprinkle "treats" which are fruits, veggies, grass...all healthy for them and then Chiquita, Chicken Little and Franklin walk around and "forage". I've found it to be the best way to get my birds to try new things, because ONE of the 3 will be brave enough to say...Hey! What's this and pick it up....that's all it takes then the other curious two say..."Hey! What do YOU have? It's MINE!" And well...because of that, my birds all eat a very well rounded variety of fruits and veggies.

The "new" tiels don't try ANYTHING new I put in their cages. They didn't have a good diet before I got them. Soon, when they can be out with our other birds, I'm hoping they'll learn to forage and eat healthy fruits and veggies too.

I'm doing what I can to discourage breeding at this time as I'm afraid to have chicks...afraid I'd want to keep every one of them! LOL! Maybe someday...MAYBE...

By the way if its only been 5 days since they've mated, there's still a chance she will lay! Sometimes a little over a week after mating before laying. Cause they will mate several times!
