Male Eclectus- Oscar and Female Eclectus- Scarlet
So Dean and I have been debating on out next bird.
He wants a Catalina macaw, but I want a Scarlet. Eventually we will get both, and it looks like his winning at the moment seems I already have my own eclectus and he wants a macaw and blah blah blah.
Aw.
But they are Beautiful and amazing birds! Does anyone own a Catalina?
And I don't know how available or expensive they are in Australia, if anyone could give me any info on that.
Thanks :)

Catalina's are hybrids right? Such beauties!!!

My two macaw brothers are Catalinas, but I live in the US so I can't help you in how much you would have to pay for one in Australia. I paid $1,200.00 for Roscoe & $500.00 for Angel. Angel was less due to his disabilities, but I would have gladly paid full price for him.

I can tell you that both boys are super to have in my life. Roscoe is totally bonded to me. He is always ready to get on my arm when I open the aviary door. Angel still hasn't bonded completely to me. He remains more reserved in his interacting with me. I feel it is more about his knowing he is different & partly due to his bond with the breeder. She spent a lot of time with him. Their coloring will not all be the same in intensity. Roscoe has a more orange/red chest and Angel is more yellow/orange. I have never owned either a scarlet or a Blue & Gold so I can only go by what I have read in comparison to their personalities. They both pretty much have a good blend from both parents. Roscoe is a clown like the B&G tend to be and both can have a bit of a hyper attitude. They are young, so time will tell which parent they most mature into. I was told by their breeder that they are called Rainbow Macaws in Australia.

Macaw's are beaituful, my dream bird
If only I had the space, perhaps in my next life
Good luck

Why not a blue and gold huh brodie ? ;) hahaha we will see what Fargo has to say about this when i tell him :p

I am not sure how much catalinas cost, or even who breeds them, but i will do some researching for you ;) I would be assuming they would cost more than a b&g.

And inverse i think prices vary between different states, in queensland blue and golds are only 5000-6000 dollars, same with nsw and vic that i'm aware of
and greenwings are 12000 :)

The only macaw we have had is our Catalina Sunny. She is a rehome so probably has baggage from her previous homes. She is not cuddly but she wants to be involved in what we are doing always. She has a huge vocabulary, 200+, and very much talks in context. She is bold and loves to go places and meet people. We love her. She is like a child, sometimes moody, overtired, cranky, and other times all kisses.

Tab, Fargo knows I love him and always will, and one day I will get a B&G, and ill get a female so Fargo can have a girlfriend he can come visit! Haha. One day!
So I have done a bit more research and read all your posts, and I'm now completely content on getting a Catalina macaw, especially after watching some funny YouTube videos of others! Haha. There damn adorable, beautiful, smart little guys aren't they! Well I guess not so little..

This won't be happening for a while, not until we get a bigger place anyway. I'm hoping by then we can get the Catalina and Scarlet at the same time. Then start thinking along the track about adding a B&G to the flock. And a couple of greys. Then ill be set. Haha :D
Oh I can't wait any longer :(

My first macaw (I have 3 now) is Doogie, a Catalina Hybrid. My family doctor is also a good friend and we both sing together in church choir. Doc Tom was recently remarried and his new wife and Doogie did not get along so he GAVE him to me. Doogie was four at the time and he is 19 now. I'll admit that Doogie was one tough customer in the beginning, largely because he was teased by the doctor's children. He certainly made me a 'Macaw Person'. Many people have issues with macaw hybrids, but I was not about to look a gift horse in the mouth. Doogie as very smart and very powerful with a large vocabulary to boot. Here are a couple of pictures of him. Click on the pics to enlarge.

Giving you a heads up if you start to do the call around for hybrids...

In Australia, we have very limited gene pools, so understand that if you start calling around breeders for hybrids, you won't get the best responses. Many of the breeders I know hate the idea of hybrids and find the idea of them "destroying" the limited gene pool that Australia has for macaws.

In saying that though, there are at least two breeders I am aware of who specialise in breeding hybrids. If you need contact information, pm me.

I LOVE Catalina macaws!! I think they are amazing! I know a girl who has one, and she is a gorgeoussssssss bird. I think they would be very pricey and hard to find in Aus though! :(

Oh but our girls are just as beautiful Casey! :p
Oh if you could find out any info from your friend if she is in Australia that would be awesome :)
